Re: Quick Knock right at engine start up..

I didn't see Ol' Jim's response before I typed mine. I agree with him 100%...

Re: Quick Knock right at engine start up..

I had Valvoline Max Life highmileage 10w30 in my truck ans it still knocked. Is it ok for the knock to be there or should you try to get it to go away? DOens't it do damage in the engine everytime it knocks? Crate engine maybe 7 or 8 years ago. That's the only time the head gaskets have been removed. No leaks as best I can tell. I have a mechanic buddy that read the GM bulliten that recommended steering away from the AC Delco Oil Filter and going to a certain part number Fram oil filter, which is what is on the truck now.

Its just getting a little looser as a result of wear. The knock won't cause problems, just make sure you use good oil, good filters. If anything, try a smaller weight oil (5w30 Maxlife for instance), and see what that does.

The AC filter has been revised and adressed a few problems it had. Fram on the other hand, have one of the most poorly constructed filters on the market. Glued paper endcaps, loose, poorly built filter. I would stay away from fram for sure.

Re: Quick Knock right at engine start up..

Yes I was hearing a deep knock. A 40 year chevy tech told me to use 10W40 w/ STP oil treatment. Hasn't knocked yet, actually runs a little more quiet. This may be a stupid question, but what is the difference between 5w30 and 10w30? They are both 30 weight oil, right? DO you guys think that 10W40 w/ STP is too thick?

Thanks for the input! I appreciate the response!

Re: Quick Knock right at engine start up..

You can fix this problem by using 5w30 and an oil filter with anti drain back valve such as ac Delco or k and n oil filters which will keep the oil in the engine

Re: Quick Knock right at engine start up..

What model year vehicle is this??? WHAT ENGINE? 2wd or 4wd? What chassis?

1. Deep knock at the front of the engine? If the vehicle is old enough, I wouldn't rule out a defective engine-mounted fuel pump that knocks until it's built fuel pressure. Double-check the pump for fuel leaks.

2. If the oil filter is vertical like older Chevy engines, an anti-drainback valve isn't going to be of much help. If the filter is mounted non-vertically, an anti-drainback valve may be useful.
