Re: Who says you need a truck to tow a car?

the CRX is 60/40 weight stock, so remember that when building the trailer and placing the axle... you want it so that it doesn't lift up the rear of your car, or lower the rear of your car... maybe a lil lowering won't hurt... added traction in the rear, but def not lifting.

You want more tongue weight.

Re: Who says you need a truck to tow a car?

thanks for clarifying that..:P

I'll over-explain it here:
Basically... if you combine the weight of the trailer and the car and place the axle right in the middle of the weight differential, it will cause the trailer to be unstable at high speeds (35+ MPH)

If you place the axle too far forward, it will want to lay backward on the tail, which will lift up your rearend, making your car unstable.

If you put the axle too far back, it will cantilever all the weight of the car and trailer to the tongue, meaning that it will place all that weight on your hitch, which will pre-load your suspension, making your car potentially unstable.

The idea here is to figure out the balance point of the trailer and car as a whole (without the axle), then place the axle so that 60-70% of the weight is transferred forward, and the remainder is behind the axle.

This will cause your rear suspension to pre-load slightly, but won't bog you down or cause your front end to lift up at all, and rear pre-load is kinda necessary to keep everything moving in a straight line.

Another approach:
Build it like a wagon, only with the front axle attached to the tongue, and able to pivot w/ the direction of movement... i.e. if you turn left, the trailer's front axle will follow you.

The weak point of this idea is the single (movable) connection point, which will need to be checked and serviced on a regular basis, however, it will allow uneven weight distribution across the trailer w/o affecting the tow vehicle.

After all is said and done, 50/50 or less is going to be really bad on your car. IMO, 60/40 is optimal. (That would be why most street cars are pretty close to 60/40 factory.)

Re: Who says you need a truck to tow a car?

Don't think its in a sad state now. Getting everything put back together on it now. Door skins are on their way, dash is almost in, gauges are mounted, bumpers are on, mainly gotta get the wiring done and paint now.

I will end up posting pics of it done over on RPR when I get done with it and maybe in the OT section here.

Re: Who says you need a truck to tow a car?

I'm still thinking about buying a pit-truck... like a 24ft box van or something that the whole car will fit inside... and about $6000 in tools or so... enough to tear it down and rebuild it on the side of the road.

Re: Who says you need a truck to tow a car?

In Arkansas now, but was in Oklahoma for awhile. I've already had 2 people offer to buy this new one from me, but I'm not gonna sell it. Gonna drop a z6 in it and keep it in one piece, leave my white one to be my "work horse"

Dropzone, I was thinking about that for awhile for the CRX, I just don't have the funds or credit to get a box truck to do it with.

Re: Who says you need a truck to tow a car?

Tony, I can't really afford it at the moment either, I was just thinking about getting a used U-Haul and changing the engine in it... then again, if gas prices keep doing what they're doing, I think I'm going to go a diff route... to be determined later.
