Re: Power to fuel pump?

I am no mechanic! Just a garage hack! Should I purchase the whole fuel pump module or just a fuel pump? Will the whappp test work a few times?

Sometimes it is better to replace the whole fuel pump assembly but that is your decision based on your budget, DIY experience and time available. The pump kits are alot of extra work especially with the electrical connectors and the way they mount. Also, restricted by the spring loaded supports and splash cover. Easy to break parts if you are not very careful. Another issue in addition to a bad pump is the wiring harness to the pump since it is immersed in gasoline. I've seen the wires to the fuel pump and float level unit in really bad shape.

Re: Power to fuel pump?

I'd replace the pump only and inspect the rest- but sometimes you can't get just the pump-

The whappp test will work for awhile- but I don't recommend doing it daily-- although I had a guy with an S-10 do it when he had to for 4 months- once it is running it will continue to run until you shut the car off-and it may start okay a few times on its own-- kind of like a blower motor- once it starts- it runs until you shut it off- I saw a woman drive her car for over a year whapping her blower motor-- what a PITA...

Re: Power to fuel pump?

Well to make things more difficult, I started the car, It ran for 5 minutes and it died. Started it again, ran for 3 minutes and it died again. Now the pump wont turn on and it is sitting in the driveway instead of the garage. Did I mention it was -16 degrees below zero farienhiet?

Re: Power to fuel pump?

Do you have the primer lead jumpered to full time 12volts? That helps- gives you plenty of time and tries to whapppp the pump into action....

Re: Power to fuel pump?

How can I make a lead wire? Can I hook up a battery charger to the pump?

Re: Power to fuel pump?

Perhaps you missed this part in my previous post...

You can double check your circuit by putting 12v to the fuel pump primer terminal in the underhood accessory wiring junction box. This bypasses the ECM controls and runs the fuel pump full time- then you can check back at the gas tank if the 12v is present constantly-

Or you can put a paper clip across terminals 30 and 87 of your fuel pump relay connection- to jump 12volts to the fuel pump full time... (that is what the relay does when commanded by the PCM)- except now it won't turn off after 2 seconds.......
