Progress continues on the interior but I've since tackled the rims...

I've always found it alot easier to create new wheel designs using existing 1/24 rims. Building a symetrical wheel from scratch is very hard to pull off on the first attempt. For the Sessanta rims I used Fujimi's AVS model 5's as a base because of the similar 5-paired spoke configuration.

The conversion began by milling the face of the wheel to create a flat surcace.




Pieces of styrene strip were added to the shape the spokes. I later revised this by added more strip, shaping further with a little filing.


The main bulk of the rim was removed to make it easier to work with.


A sheet of 10thou styrene was glued to the face and trimed. Holes were drilled at all appropriate corners to create the necessary contours. I did this to avoid using putty later on which would be less accurate.


Then trimmed the openings.


Using thicker 20thou sheet, which is to allow for wastage when sanding later on, I traced out the design to be applied to the left hand spokes.


The centre was shaped, wheel nuts added and its mostly complete. Just have to reattach to the rim and cast copies. Its not perfect but I'm happy with it enough to be part of a one off project.


On the reverse of the wheel you can see all the additional styrene strips I added to create the shape. The only decent reference I managed to find for the wheels was a Youtube vid of the official unvieling and pictures of the Hotwheels 1/18 diecast.

I love how humble you are about the rims, lol. These are awesome. I can tell that you really put a lot of thought into changing them. Great job and like others said, if you cast them, you have another customer here.
