Re: A.f.m.o.t.y 2007??
Since MOTY is a popularity contest, we will never find a way to have equal starting points for all entries. There will be no way to ensure that the car that ran a 14 pages WIP won´t have more attention than builds just being shown in the completed section. If we would ensure equal starting points for everybody - there wouldn´t be any further contest on a popularity basis.
Nevertheless I would like to see another contest, although I recall that I never entered before. But that is something to be understood. If you enter you step up onto the plate with the big guys. And I don´t see my models being up to par with them. What would make this different - maybe - is the contest being included in a thread that would stay permanently on the board for the next year. Everybody entering the board would have a chance to see, what happened the last year on AF. In this thread the actual winner of the MOTY could be honored as the "best voted" model by the board - something like: "Hey everybody, this is what we think was the best last year..." By this the winner becomes part of this community and therefore I think that more people would enter, because you´re not openly run in a competion but contribute to the legacy of AF in 07. Something like AF class of 2007 - our yearbook.

Re: A.f.m.o.t.y 2007??
godfather23, I'm not sure I completely follow your idea.
But here's another thought: Instead of model of the year, thread of the year could be a terrific idea. We could start a nominating thread, and people could nominate (and second) other people's threads from '07. Then when nominations close, all members will have a period of time (say two weeks?) to review the nominated threads, and vote on them in terms of the best build and the best done thread (amazing work, quality of descriptions, how much did you learn from following the thread, etc). Nominations will have to be held to a reasonable number (maybe 10-15?), so we all don't have to review every build thread from the last year. Votes will not be posted or updated until the close of voting- so there will be no horserace popularity contest, and no one's votes will be influenced by what thread is behind/ahead. Here's why I like it: -It encourages and celebrates building and sharing of building- which is what we all come here for. -It encourages better written threads for next year. -It seems as objective as we're likely to get for a contest here. -It gives us all the chance to review and honor the threads that have amazed us the most in the last year. We all come here to build, share our builds, and watch and learn from other people's builds. So why not celebrate the builder/thread that did that best in the last year? I also like the 'yearbook' idea, where everyone submits their best build of the year for an '07 gallery. But I really don't see any good way of doing this as a contest that specifically rewards building, instead of photography and popularity. Thoughts??

Re: A.f.m.o.t.y 2007??
Hi everyone.
Its with much sadness that I'll have to pass the reign's on this year to somebody else to take over this event after 5 years running it. I've given it alot of thought as the time got closer, and after reading this thread today it should really be time to pass it on to someone else. Sorry for leaving it so late but time seems to pass by so quickly. I don't have the time to run the event 100% and due to my lack of time on AF these days I thought it wouldn't be fair to try and carry it on by myself. My personal life is going though some changes, and with trying to run our own car club in New Zealand (NZ Primera car club), and now also being a member of the NZ Mustang club, time is very limited. Never seems to be enough time in the day to try and get everything done. Unfortunately building models has become a thing of the past at the moment. I want to spend more time with family, working on my 65 Mustang also takes up alot more time then I thought....but its good fun!! The contest has failed in the last couple of years to attract big numbers...why, I don't know as there are awesome builds done over the year and its a real shame people don't submit them. 2 years ago when I got accused of cheating really put a damper on the contest for me and to be honest I never really gave it 100% last year with keeping voting results updated. Those that don't know, I was accused of rigging votes in favor of some of my "mates" on AF. Those of you that know me should know it was a load a crap and it really disappointed me that others thought that way about the contest. Its also one of the reasons I stopped posting as much and visiting AF...but thats a few years ago and it's all water under the bridge for me now...... so all is forgotten. Remember that I started the contest as a bit of FUN so that modelers could pick there favorite build over the year and enter into a contest that we could enjoy and to "remember" some of the fantastic builds that are done over the year. With so many built during a year it was just a way for people to show off there favorite build one more time. Simply a "people choice" voting system was done that saved all the issues about a model being a "out of the box" or a "heavily modified" build and having to run 3-4-5 different category's. There have been many idea's on how to improve it, things that are wrong etc etc, but, it was run the best way i thought possible and I'm sure you hear more positive comments then bad. Hopefully the contest can carry on as IMO its a great contest and hopefully I can get involved again in the following years. All the best Wazza

Warren, It's great to hear from you. Your presence on AF has been missed. We have lost a good few 'master builders' on this forum, such as yourself, Hiroboy, Rally Raider, Fly On The Wall, etc. Hopefully, another Moderator would be able to pick up the reigns. Stay in touch. |

Re: A.f.m.o.t.y 2007??
I suppose a competition of this nature will never be perfect given the forum environment. Having said that I think it should stay a competition though - after all, if it wasn't a competition you could almost name it the Completed Projects / Gallery Sub-Forum.
The only thing I would change would be to not put the entrants name/nickname under the picture of the entered model. There will always be a bit of popularity skewing the results, but I don't believe this effect is overly strong. However taking the identity of the modeler away from the pictures may help in this regard. Personally I also find that the idea of competition pushes me harder to do better builds, and I'm sure a lot of you are the same. It would be a shame to see the AFMOTY go by the wayside, and I think that provided a minimum number of say 10 entries are submitted that it should be run. Perhaps at the start of November (in future) a thread asking for interest could be started, and if the pre-requisite number is there then we go ahead. I doubt there'd be trouble getting 10 entries though, so this is probably overkill. And... we also have to find a person generous enough to devote a moderate amount of time to tallying the results and posting the pictures. That won't be me this year, but all the same I have a healthy dose of respect and thanks for the person who hopefully steps up to take on the task. |

Re: A.f.m.o.t.y 2007??
Warren,
I am sorry to hear about the accusations. It is the first time I`ve heard of this. Everyone, Maybe for verification and to avoid the results from being questioned, we should have all voters submit their votes to both the person selected to run the event, and also another moderator? |

Re: A.f.m.o.t.y 2007??
As i really enjoyed AFMOTY last time i decided to write some words about my opinion.
-i think this still should be a contest. Contest and exhibition have totally different feeling. And i guess in the modelling world most people do not enter the contest with the clear aim of winning it. -about popularty, either subject or user - i have really good memories and experience about this. When i entered in 2005 as quite a newbie, my entrie was the only bike. And i was really surprised that i was fighting for 1st place till the last days. So i guess not the popularity of user or subject results votes. -if it will be run by somebody, i can offer some small prize - Geronimo Works wheel set. Hope that somebody will pick it up and will run the contest

Re: A.f.m.o.t.y 2007??
Just as a thought, perhaps we could have a rookie subset. Entries would have to be from members of AF for less than (1 yr? 2 yrs?) who'd also ask to be included in the rookie subset. They'd of course be eligible to win the whole thing outright too. It might encourage people who feel they have sub-contest winning builds to test the waters a little bit.

Re: A.f.m.o.t.y 2007??
I'm also sad to hear all those issues on previous editions: I seen as a spetactor and they was great.
The thing is that we haven't any TIME to discuss it now and try to manage than. So first question is: would sameone manage it? The idea of post double vote's PM to MOTY's manager and a moderator/admin sound good to prevent troubles. Any other ideas like a 07 collection would be great but first we need to decide if we want the MOTY or not. I'm for YES if someone run it: I haven't the time and language's skills to do it.

Re: A.f.m.o.t.y 2007??
So is anybody prepared to run the AFMOTY comp this year since Warren cannot? If the interest is still there, I'm happy to take on the job of running it. Trouble is I will be away on holidays when the comp usually starts so it will have to be delayed a few days.
Also, I believe the comp is only worth running if it remains in the same format that Warren has used for the last five years. I've found from experience that changing things to try and please everybody simply will not work. The formula needs to be kept simple. So unless somebody beats me to it, I'll kick off an official comp thread sometime this week and we'll see what happens. |
