You're absolutely right, no speedtraps, no tickets, no moola. Besides the obvious highway differences, I know for a fact that our transportation or highway systems were designed based on autos of the past.
Cars are safer now and can handle much better than back when they had thin bias ply tires, no ABS, ESP, All wheel drive, Air Bags and other safety devices currently employed in our autos now.
55, 65 and 70 or 75 is about the highest you will get and that speed is too slow for cross country driving.
