Well i admit, pman and guiddy do nice work, but because someone says that primer is a must, doesn't mean didly squat.

Sure it does help the paint to stick better, maybe useful when polishing out the paint or something. Oh and it gives u a barrier coat to the plastic so some paints don't etch into the plastic rendering it non-stripable, and gives u either a grey or white or whatever color to put ur topcoat on, so the color of the plastic doesn't bleed through when your using more translucent(is that the word? it's 3am and i'm doing my hwk) paints.

Other than that, what else can primer do, it does not chemically alter the top coat u put on,and it doesn't smooth the paint out for u, it doesn't enhance the vividness of ur topcoat.

so blah, no flame war here, just an informative discussion.

In all this, how could Integra818 tell that he hasn't used primer?

The whole idea of primmer IMO is to give the paint a good surface for the top coat of paint to stick to and also it helps to find any "mistakes" on the body like seem lines etc etc you may have over looked. Also after sanding it helps to fill in all the very tiny tiny marks left from sanding....therefore giving you the smoothest possible surface to apply the top coat.
Alot easier to sand primmer then a top coat

If I use grey primer under yellow paint, it will make the color darker right? I can't find white primer anywhere, I baught a can of semigloss white but the color of the body is already semigloss white so...

What if I sand the body with 600 grit sandpaper, which I have already done, will that substitute primer?

NO

you can try and smooth the body out enough by using higher grit 1000-2000 before you paint, but who knows if the paint will stick

yes they do.. but its a bit expensive. and automotive primer works fine for me and its cheaper

2 Those not convinced about primer: Take 2 bodies; prime one, don't prime the other one; paint both with some duplicolor auto paint; observe the results. Primer isn't MANDATORY but it can make a HUGE difference Just voicing an opinion
