Head gaskets should always be replaced together. Whenever you do heads, the heads should be resurfaced removing a very thin layer of metal. This will clean the surface, remove any corrosion, surface imperfections, etc. If you only do one, the compression ratio can become unbalanced on one side or the other. By doing both, the ratio is the same.

Well, it has been a week since picking up the van. It has worked well. Actually, it seems as though the heating system is working better than it ever has since I bought the van 2 years ago. Maybe the problem was starting to appear some time ago, just never noticed because it is -20 here in Toronto in the winter months,.
Maybe that is why my block heater never worked really well?
I thank all the people on this forum for their help.
I just hope the van lasts another 4 years.
