Re: Audi R10 TDI LeMans 2006 from LMM + SMS

the SMS kits (Cobra, R-10 and the Corvette) look pretty sweet indeed. Mac's Modeling is taking pre-orders. he mentioned it awhile back in one of his newsletters. if you haven't dealt with him before, he's great. highly recommended.

Re: Audi R10 TDI LeMans 2006 from LMM + SMS

Hi

ok guys, everybody brings good arguments for both kits.

My intention was to show the immense difference in price at first sight. We´ll have to wait for the kits to get a more exact view about about what the modeler gets for his money. And: it isn´t the first time, the same kit is produced by several manufacters.

So, lets hope that they appear soon (to continue this discussion with facts )

Re: Audi R10 TDI LeMans 2006 from LMM + SMS

I think that both kits can have their "market" with no problem. If we add that LMM + SMS kit will probably include CF decals and PE / turned alu / resin parts, the difference in price over Revell kit will not be as big as it will look.

Re: Audi R10 TDI LeMans 2006 from LMM + SMS

The audi is priced A60 euros in some preorder shops in france.
It will be out in April.
I agree on the maths that has been done. Also, even if the quality of revell kits have increased, I'll surely buy one, just to see.
I wanted to buy the LMM kit but seeing what's on the pic from hlj it looks a bit empty. I'm sure there will be some CF decal and more but anyways the LMM kits are very simple in conception.I'm doign a LMM panoz right now, and it's really different from the renaissance for example. Each kit has its qualities and defaults.
Also, Spark will release the R10 in 1/18 die cast for 80 dollars.

Thanks for the links with the photos, CeeElle

Interesting to see that the LMM/SMS Audi even comes with an etched wiper ;-))

Re: Audi R10 TDI LeMans 2006 from LMM + SMS

Well, I just think it is fantastic news that 2 manufacturers are bringing out a kit of the same subject. With this, everyone can buy an R10 according to once budget, skill and likings.

You want to spend 140+ euros and have everything you need included? You can!
You want to spend a third of that price and do all yourself? You can!

Although the Revell kits are criticized a lot on poor quality etc. I believe they are just a good challenge for every modeler. Any Revell can be turned into a winning model if time and effort are spend on them. It's only about perception. You pay 50 something for a Revell kit with upgrades etc and spend 3 months building it or you spend triple that amount and spend 1 month building it... If in good hands, both will come out superb.

Besides, it says "skill level 9" and "80 pieces in the box"... so, maybe, just maybe, Revell is brining up the quality of their cars to the same level as their 1/48th scale planes?

I build Revell's Rally Escort Mk.2 last year and added Reji's set to it. Being a slow builder, I spend more then 6 months on it and so far people have been saying it was the best Escort they've seen so far. True a very though build with lots of issues, but in the end, very rewarding. In the Matchbox/Airfix days there weren't even cars in 1/24th! So, we're really spoiled with the R10!!

... and in scale 1:24 for about 120,- Euro (As mentioned earlier: I possess the Aston Martin, I had the Corvette C6-R in my hands - both fantastic)

What´s making me frown a little bit: LMM makes great kits (at an reasonable price for the cubside models, higher priced for the detailed models).
Now the name SMS appears on the package, some more parts, ok, and makes (in Europe) the curbside kits 50,- + Euro more expensive.

I for one would love to have been a fly on the wall when Matthew Wells found out Revell was doing the R10 model

I imagine there was some language that's not suitable for public consumption

Re: Audi R10 TDI LeMans 2006 from LMM + SMS

y'know, i'm not sure if the revell kit actually has that much impact on the resin kit.
I mean, for a start, they're two different markets almost; the resin kit buyer would probably still buy the resin kit and those who buy the revell because it's cheaper probably wouldn't really be looking to buy the resin kit either.

while there is some cross-over in the market, I don't think it is that significant to make a different to sales.

Thats an excellent point that has been touched on in this thread. But i will say this, I love resin kits for all there worth but, I would not have bought both the Ren and Hiro DBR-9 if a plastic kit had been made. On that statement, i think the real debate is that wether or not Revell is making a good decision by putting out the R10 or vice versa. In other words, in the long sale, will Revell make money off this release. They typically dont do these types of kits, barring the Corvette LM cars of course. And to my knowledge there 1/24 F1's havent been a great success. Where as LM kits are expected from the resin market since Tamiya all but dropped them. I think the larger portion of Revell R10's are going to be bought by the resin buyers as a cheap engine upgrade for the resin kit. I dont think Revell has the market or the following to support some random LM kit release. I hope they keep it up in the long run so i save some money, but i feel both releases are going to reach there prespective markets. Im just surprised the Revell R10 isnt 1/20th LOL, some of you Motorsport fans will get this joke.

I think so, too.

Now they bring built up Moto GP-Bikes in 1:22 . Fantastic, a new line of models and a new scale that fits to no common scale .
