Re: WIP - Ford Escort - Waldegard 1979

That's a really nice looking build so far Mal, I really like the colour scheme, different from the run of the mill Mk2 colours! I may have to add that one to my Escort build list, although I suspect the paint may be a little difficult to get in the UK!

I'm guessing you mean the MRM *right* hand drive dash? All the Esci/Revell Escorts I have are already left hand drive?

All the best

Very interesting subject and the build itself. I will be watching this one to see how it comes out! Great work!

Re: WIP - Ford Escort - Waldegard 1979

Sorry guys, haven't been around much or able to do much modelling, being that it is the end of the financial year here in Australia. Work is just so busy I have been getting home too stuffed to concentrate on building.

In the last few days I have managed to 99% finish this one. Just waiting on some thin black rubber sheet to make some mud flaps and that would be it.

I used the Reji detail set and must admit the PE sheet is very comprehensive.

The dash was converted to right hand drive and I threw the slick tyres away. The kit wheels were used however I made the front ones narrower to copy the real ones on these cars. Tyres are modern Tamiya ones from a '93 Celica rally car. The Monte Carlo car had a set of gravel tyres included when they were not used. Since then I have bought from pyperhound (as Rssierra suggested) in the UK casting both the dash and some forest tyres. Next Escort I build I will try them out.

Quite happy after the trouble I had with the paint. Can not praise Rod's decals highly enough. Very thin with only a little carrier film showing. Just be very careful spraying clear over them as he warns in the instruction sheet. If you want any, Wong has them at Mediamixhobby, Hiroboy has them, Domino and of course Rod's shop Ragged Edge Design.

The 1/43 kit is also available using a Jemmpy kit with a right hand dash.

Here are a couple of indoor shots. Just hope to get some outside shots on the weekend.

Next up, finishing the BMW M1 I started last year

Excellent looking model, Malscar. You sure did a nice job with the decals. Good to see you back again.

Re: WIP - Ford Escort - Waldegard 1979

I take advantage of the brought back of this thread to ask a thing.
I found a 1/43 decal set, but for the same year version.
Are the following year Ari's car door plates the same ? it seems that they are a bit different.
Do someone have some pic of the door plates and rally plates ?
thanks by advance

Re: WIP - Ford Escort - Waldegard 1979

Hi rally master, its rod here, and in 2 weeks I will be meeting with Bill who originated the car/decals. Talk about a pitbull kind off bloke, lol.

We did the 1/43 car and yes he did a 1/18 scale (Newstar), and had to make the decals with an alps. Now he has all the names, logos, etc to add to list
and make all the drivers who raced it. Ari also raced it in '80.

I am sending all the info plus the 1/24 decals to a professional in Spain to make a 1/18 set, even this guy makes an Alps MD1000 look good.

I will keep this info going as its nice to see ppl still interested.

Re: WIP - Ford Escort - Waldegard 1979

its nice to tell your story and make your advertisement but answers to questions are nice too !!

Especially from who seem to have all informations searched.

So second attempt:
" Are the doors plates and rally the same in 79 and 80...?? "

I'm interested in building a 1/43 Ari's car but I only need the 80 stuff as already own the 79 decals.
Would probably purchase but a new complete set of the 80 car if no other way possible but would appreciate to previously get informations about what are the eventual differences exactly.

Re: WIP - Ford Escort - Waldegard 1979

sorry about that, but I am a bike nut not a car one, hey wheren still nuts.

i recall Bill saying the Greg Carr Escort had a different logo here and ther, maybe the door numbers etc. I will call him today and ask what the changes are, he is kind of up to date on that. From memory the car had a black bonnet at some stage,as well.

Rather than say something now, I will get it right and get back tonight perth time. rod

Re: WIP - Ford Escort - Waldegard 1979

Hi Phil, in regards to other cars, I do not know all the differences of other cars. We decided to do the '79 car as Bill admires Bjorn, and thats what we went after, and thanks to people like Malscar we seemed to hit it on the head.

It was later he decided to make Bonds car in 1/18, that was never an issue with me because he used someone with an Alps printer. He then started researching the other cars and came up with a list of variations for Carr, Ari, and a couple of others.

That is what I am seeing him about in 2 weeks, as its possible to get these changes made in 1/24 and the 1/18 scale Bill wants.Thats where I come in as the chap who will be doing art is in Spain, same place as Lorenzo, lol.

I will be posting changes so will endevour to let you's know.

Re: WIP - Ford Escort - Waldegard 1979

BTW Phil, I may be able to get the changes made in 1/43 for Ari's car as well. Its not as if the whole sheet needs doing, just an attachment of changes on seperate page.

Re: WIP - Ford Escort - Waldegard 1979

Rod, If you need help just email me (will send you a pm)

I am very interested in the 1/18. I also have someone here in Canberra who has been doing decals from 1/18 to 1/43. Not commercial quantiies, but quality wise he can't be beaten. This was one we were planning.

Phil, Rod probably can't answer the question regarding Vatanen since, as he states, he is a bike person. His mate was the guy who is a rally nut.

The door plates are different (not by much) and there were other sponsor changes. Will hunt down some photos for you.

Re: WIP - Ford Escort - Waldegard 1979

Thanks guys,

as already stated, as a Vatanen's cars collectors, the only interesting thing to me is the 1/43 version of the 80 event depicting Ari's car.
I bought the 79 decal to have a working base to complete, but will buy a new one if complete to build the 80 car.
Door plates must be slightly different from 79 to 80, I found some pics of Ari's car, but most are black and white and/or taken from so far that it's impossible to read the door plates and see the rally plates, so I can make them by myself.
Any help will then be much appreciated.

Ok, the Port Macquarie #1 should be red, therefore is the '80 Southern Cross Rally.

The Southern Cross door plates would be '79 (without seeing the decal).

In '80 it was Vatanen / Richards
Carr / Gocentas
Bond / Dawson-Damer

#2 Lombard, if Ari is either '81 or '82

Ari's car - '80 Southern Cross

Greg Carr - same event. Other than Ari's car being lhd, the rest is the same. Phil, note here in Australia we did not have the front spoiler as it kept being knocked off on rough events, and also the wheels on the rear. They stopped using minilites as they weren't strong enough.
