Re: Revell 1/24 McLaren MP4/20

Thanks all for your compliments, I'm very happy with the end results of this McLaren. The last Revell AG kit I built was the Williams FW19...Revell have since come a long way improving their F1 kits. I will not hesitate to build the rest of the Revell F1 kits in my stash now. If only they were 1/20 scale!!!

Re: Revell 1/24 McLaren MP4/20

Very very nice Bil. I have that kit myself and haven't seen a built-up version yet. Of course, mine won't look anything like yours, but one can dream.

Any particular reason why you went with JPM? Not Kimi? Are the Kimi decals in the kit?

Re: Revell 1/24 McLaren MP4/20

Very nice (as usual )

Do you know if there are after market decals for the 4/20?
I have the Revell kit but it has no decals and for some reason can't find then anywhere on-line.

Murray...As I mentioned in an earlier post, I like JPM because he doesn't normally conform...he's a little bit controversial. Yes, there are Kimi decals in the kit. It was a hard choice to pick which driver I was going to do, as I like them both...maybe if Kimi had a little bit more of a personality, I would have chose him....mind you, he does like to party from what I understand!!!

The only aftermarket decals for this kit that I know of are the test version decals that converts the car into the pre-season orange test version. I have these decals and was originally going to build that version, but I didn't have a black (dark grey) and silver McLaren in my collection of built up models, so I changed my mind. Try contacting Revell AG...if not, the MP4/20 is cheap enough on EBAY that you could probably pick one up for under 20 bucks.

Re: Revell 1/24 McLaren MP4/20

The only wrong thing that I'll see is the driver's name: he isn't a F1 driver LOL (J/K) oki jokes a part I didn't recognized Bill's sign at first look and I though who are this one good enough to switch junk in a good stuff, great at least.

Have those kits something of the gearbox? I'm in the needs of a 1/24 Ferrari carbon gearbox for the F333SP and I'm wondering about a Revell Ferrari, but I never seen a WIP, ever finished stuff.

Thanks for sharing this beauty with us Bil, I love it! Also thanks for illustrating how the rough Revell F1 kits can be transformed into absolute jems (at least by a master carftsman like Bil)!

Re: Revell 1/24 McLaren MP4/20

I have always been convinced that one doesn't need an expensive kit to build a great model. This MP4/20 confirms this by all means.

I'm having this kit, 2 in fact as I'm gonna build both Kimi's and JPM's, on my bench to be started soon. So, thanks for sharing Bill, as it has given me some good inspiration on how to improve things. I knew about the S27 set (have 2 in backorder since a couple of weeks) but the Kyosho's are a very good idea indeed.

2 questions regarding the front suspension.

1) Did you use the kit part as is, or did you modify it?
I've been dry-fitting the monoque and reckoned front syspension and cockpit needs to be installed, prior to painting, in order to be able to fill the gaps between the different parts of the suspension. But from the images it looks like you didn't do that?

2) The front suspension seem to be attached with PE parts. Are these coming from a specific set? (Was it Sakatsu, AcuStion, not sure?)

Anyways, thanks again for sharing, you've convinced me I can push a little further when I get really starting to build it. For the moment, still looking at it, turning it up-side-down.

Huudo,

Glad to see you can't tell!!! Because the background of this area is black, I elected to go the easy route because there are no shadows to highlight the fact that there are seams...it's virtually impossible to tell. Mind you, had I built the orange test version, then it would be obvious that the seams were not filled because of the lighter colour. So...to answer your question, the front suspension was not modified other than filling the holes that are used to attach the kit plastic bargeboards. I used a pin vise to drill new holes on the bottomside of the lower wishbones to attach the photoetch aero devices.
The after section of the front upper wishbone has a photoetch "mounting plate". I can't recall which aftermarket set this came from, perhaps AcuStion. The one that comes with the S27 kit is too big IMHO.

Actually, I quite like the sound of that orange test version! I think that maybe I'll try and pick up a set of those decals. I think you mentioned them by name earlier in the thread so I'll pull out the details from there.

Do the test decals also include stuff for the dash and steering wheel etc.?

Re: Revell 1/24 McLaren MP4/20

I too missed your name on the thread and was amazed to see this great work. Then I realized it was from you, all things fitted in that moment.
It will always be the modeler not the model.

If I remember correctly, I have the test version decals from Tabu. No, they do not have the other decals...only the exterior livery.

Re: Revell 1/24 McLaren MP4/20

Hi Bil,

Nice work on what was a very fast but fragile car. I read through your build diary with interest... thanks for taking the time out to put it together.

Can't wait to see the next one.

Kind regards,
Bill
