Re: Need help on DSM-ONE

A forum would clutter it. Keep it to just pose as an information database.

Re: Need help on DSM-ONE

Just wanted to give everyone some more info on the site/let people give their 2 cents. We decided that the site wouldn't be open to everyone to unrestrictedly modify (like wikipedia). This may just be only at first until we can get the site up and running good. Eventually though, I really think it needs some kind of system for members to modify it easily and quickly without submitting it to mods.

For instance when I said it would be complete, that was because I thought everyone that visited and looked at, say, BOVs, could look through all the ones listed on dsm-one and say "hey, they dont have the SSQV. Well I'll just put it on there then. And hey I've got some really good pics of it too that I can put on. And I know this vfaq on it." It just seems really time consuming and tedious for mods to review EVERY change if this site gets big. It was just supposed to be like bittorrent and feed off itself if you know what I mean. If you guys can think of any creative system to solve this problem it would be a big help.

Re: Need help on DSM-ONE

That could open it up to a lot of misinformation and disaster though. It only takes one person to take the site down in just a few clicks. I wouldn't let just anybody edit the information. Maybe not just mods, but you would need some type of ranking system for the members. Like the first 10 or 20 suggestions go through mods, and if they show they know what they are talking about then give them unrestricted access to edit or something like that. I just think your asking for trouble if you open it up to everyone right away.

Re: Need help on DSM-ONE

I acquired a host with Ruby. I'll start moving stuff over to it tonight. It's going to take me a bit. I have 4-5 domains to migrate and close out the old account.

But we are getting there.

Re: Need help on DSM-ONE

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. The host just installed rails to my account. I have to go and change the oil in the eclipse and put mudflaps on the rav and then I'll be online later tonight ~8ish to get hopefully get the site going. If anyone is around and knows ruby that wants to help tweak stuff let me know.

I'm shooting for Wednesday deployable functionality on everything.

I want to try to get David's site for dsm3d on our server if he will let us host it for him. I think it would be a super valuable tool.

For now the policy is going to be to link to information we find helpful, then add comments to that link. We are going to contact the owners of the information and ask if they mind if we host it on our site with a credited link back to them with our changes incorporated. I think thats safest. I plan to locally mirror all sites we link to my computer and if they go down I'll post the material once it disappears from the original site. I wrote a tool to do this and bundle them nicely so we can deploy them to our new site quickly. It's all automated so when we put a link in it should scrap the site.

Again everything I have is untested so once it's up we really need to hammer the whole system this coming week to populate it and find bugs/exploits (I'm sure there will be a few)

If you hate how it works once it goes live let me know. I'm open to fix/change anything!

Once you guys get the site template done email it to me [email protected] and I'll get it on the site.

I'm just about finished with a new template for it here...

Also, David is just gonna be linking parts of dsm3d to go to certain sections of dsm-one that is related to certain things... You'll see once he gets his closer to being finished...

Yes. Yes I am. Blackcrow has seen the "work in progress" and knows how the feel is going to be like. Basically, parts will get linked up with DSMOne. Still not sure exactly on everything yet, but it's all in my head... somewhere.

I would like DSM3D to have its own domain again. I would like to still keep the two seperate entities. However, with both projects working together, we can get something really nice up and running.

Re: Need help on DSM-ONE

david if you need hosting pm me. I just upgraded my hosting stuff to a rediculously large and fast server.

Anyhow this is how far I got in testing. Some stuff didn't work well so I had to back it out. I'm working on fixes.

Blackcrow in the template can you make all images linked from specifically http://www.dsm-one.org/images/ then I don't have to change it later...

For now don't go adding to the database cause It's going to all get nuked tomorrow when I'm working on it again at night. I should be around tomorrow after 9:30pm est

Anyhow proof that I am doing work on it..

http://www.novaslp.net/dsmone/faq - A Faq's page that will list all by category eventually.

http://www.novaslp.net/dsmone/faq/new - Creating a new FAQ this needs drop downs for some of the options otherwise it's ready to go...

Re: Need help on DSM-ONE

I like it, but I already see a problem with my original template and your coding clashing... I am working on some changes for this in my new template.

Re: Need help on DSM-ONE

That header needs to get fixed badly. It shows the header, than a part of it doubled up. Need to use CSS to correct that, or just set the top table height to the specific height of the image.

I did set it to a fixed height but it refuses to use the same height... On here I corrected the problem though. It was an issue with my search bar coding. It will be ok now in the new template.

Re: Need help on DSM-ONE

on windows Firefox it looks fine. It didn't on linux firefox though. The header repeated. I think I'm using the same versions of FF but I'll check again tonight when I'm home.

As I said template can be changed easy. I only had to change the images to the long names and add one line of code to it to apply it for all the pages on the site.
