Do you fish?

I try and go fishing a few times a week (except in the winter). Its on the great lakes which has a pretty good variety of fish. In fact the salmon are running now and soon and if the weather clears up - I'll be down there tonight.

With the drag off you ease your way back to the shoreline, pausing only to take a breath of the fresh sea air off the Pacific Ocean.

As you place the rod into your rod-holder securely planted in the sand, you cast your eyes down the deserted beach with only the odd sea-bird to disturb the serenity of the moment. The waves continue as they have always done - gently caressing the shore. Kicking off your shoes, you run your toes thru the hot white sand.

The sun rises further and as the eastern sky glows with amber, crimson and then to deep blue you wonder how folk who don't fish will ever experience the sea, the sky and the shore that you are feeling at that instant except as a moment's reflection.

That's why I fish.

On an aside, if you have some time over summer try going up to a place called Leigh to the north of Auckland. There is a marine reserve @ a place called Goat Island. Take a loaf of bread and a couple of cups of frozen peas - hire a mask and snorkel (even better if you have one) and hop into the water just off the rocks at the right hand side.

I've taken a lot of folk from overseas there and they are astounded by the wealth of sea-life. It's on your doorstep - go have a look.

I didnt think you could feed the fishies anymore because they were getting a bit fierce (for want of a better word) and chomping at the tourists if they didnt have food???

I agree tho its awesome seeing those snapper up close and personal - shame you cant take them home to fry up
