When the mechanism is exposed, depress and release the shufter handle release knob and watch what it does. The switch at the lower end of the linkage is what you are after.
There is a remote possibility that the solenoid itself has failed, or has somehow become inadvertently disconnected at the base of the steering column.

Thanks a bunch Blue Bow Tie you were right on the money. I did not even remove the console on my 2000 Jimmy. I was able to loosen the bottom of the shifter boot from the console. This is done by just pushing the on the front and the rear of the boot. Lift the boot as high as possible so you can see the shifter mechanism. Look down on the passenger side of the shift mechanism there is a white plastic clip. Just below that there is a small round white botton. This botton is suppose to move in when the shifter is in the park position. I took some electrical connector spray and sprayed this area pretty good. I then reached in and manually pushed the botton in and out several times. Works like new now.
Only took about 20 minutes to fix.
Next week I need to replace a front wheel bearing for the second time in 84000 miles. First one went out at 44000.
