I don't know about you guys, maybe it IS just an Australia thing...but I'm still stuck on the 5.3% alcohol rating being higher than beer. Does Utah export all their beer to you? I don't think anything I drink is below 5.5%, and that's including cough syrup! (well, not really, but if I had to...).

A Victorian company is reportedly seeking permission to sell flavoured alcoholic milk which is stronger than most beers.

Shepparton-based company Wicked Holdings wants to make strawberry, banana and chocolate flavoured drinks, with a 5.3 per cent alcoholic content, and sell it as as Moo Joose, the Herald Sun reported.

The company is currently appealing a refusal from Liquor Licensing Victoria, which said the product would encourage alcohol misuse and abuse.

Wicked Holdings spokeswoman Regan Verwey told the paper the drink had been extensively researched and met the standards of other ready-to-drink products.

Australian Drug Foundation spokesman Geoff Munro told the newspaper the product was a nightmare that would put alcohol within the reach of every child in the state.

"It's a sad day when we would take such a risk and trade our children's health in for a dollar," he said.

Liquor Licensing Victoria last week rejected Wicked Holdings' application for a pre-retail liquor licence.
I dont understand this at all?
How is it different than any other alcoholic drink? I dont think it makes any difference at all if its a beer or this stuff, how would it affect a childs health?

If a parent lets their kids drink alcohol thats not their fault, and I'm sure this stuff will be with the rest of the alcohol in the house so if its there or not there, it doesnt make any difference at all imo

Is this just an australian thing? lol j/k

btw.... Gang$tarr loves the kids

Sigh

Warning - Warning Will Robinson - Responsible email from Replicant - Warning - Warning...

I guess the significance of this article (which I posted without a comment) has perhaps been overlooked.

Whilst I appreciate that self-determination, discipline and responsibility are part of being an adult in a functional and rational society and that most of the folk who've posted here are in that category - some of us tend to forget that:

- Not all children receive a responsible upbringing from their parents

- Alcohol can be trivialised and humorised but remains a drug, albeit legal drug that regularly dispenses woe, sorrow, violence, poverty and ill-health to an not inconsiderable portion of our communities -> you can find evidence of this in OT-Stress Release in the Guilty Thread

- The responsible use of alcohol appears to beyond a considerable proportion of our youths and regularly contributes to the workload at our courts, prisons, accident wards at our hospitals, family planning clinics and morgues - I you want to see what I mean get permission to be an observer on a Friday Night in a police cruiser or an accident ward at your local hospital and see for yourself...

- The branding of 'Moo-Joose,' concept, marketing and flavoring appears to target children, underage drinkers, RTD consumers and other inexperienced consumers of alcohol

- The underage consumption of alcohol is probably the parents' responsibility to control but unfortunately the consequences tend to be borne by all us within communities. We can all point the finger but it still will not address the problem and sadly won't contribute to remedying the symptoms.

Okay sermon over...

Normal Transmission will resume shortly...

Do not adjust your PC's...

Judging by the number of badly inebriated and suicidal - or occasionally violent - people we've had to see recently who have been tanked up on RTDs, they've been a pretty damn bad thing, as far as I'm concerned. Not as bad as P, perhaps, but pretty damn bad - and easier to get than P (though perhaps not by much).

I can see why they want to ban it.

But I don't think RTD's or alco-pops are the problem. when you see reports of teens being drunk and doing bad stuff, which is happening more and more these days, it's usually on the real stuff. Like the grandma buying whiskey for them or whatever.

I agree. RTDs are relatively expensive to buy. Probably too expensive for kids to really get drunk on. There are much cheaper options available than RTDs. Look at the price of cask wine.

It's peoples human right to choose what they want, it's called freedom. Who is he to tell anybody what they should or shouldnt drink?

And stopping the production of this 1 drink doesnt help anything, the point of how drinking is bad and it contributes a load to the courts, etc. isnt right. Theres no "moo-joose" being sold right now and this stuff is happening, so if they dont start selling "moo-joose" does that mean people are going to stop drinking?

Teens and underage people who want to get drunk are going to do it weather or not theres "moo-joose" around. It doesnt make any difference at all. They already have 1000s of choices....

I think the guy who's against this is completely retarded

this guy just needs to look in the history books, prohibition didnt work 75 years ago and it wont work now

*edit*
btw whats this talk of RTDs an Ps? that you NZers are talking about?
People with not much money here drink 40s They're only like $2.50 and 1 is all it takes (till u start drinking more )

And to follow up on Moondog... the stupid senseless waste of human life and suffering from drink-driving I've had to endure after coming across just such accidents, going far too many funerals of people who've died as victims of other accidents, seen families and friends torn asunder and having to spend time at physical rehabilitation centres choked up with folk who've suffered neurological, spinal and physical, emotional and head injuries.

It ain't pretty, it definitely isn't fun, it's not for the squeamish or easily disturbed. It's nasty, sickening stuff and there aren't a lot of happy endings - just a lot of time spent and emotional suffering.

RTD's are Ready-To-Drinks. Like premixed Jack Daniels and cola, or Vodka and Cranberry juice. also known as alco-pops.

Regarded as bad because they taste sweet so kids will like them and it makes them easier to drink.

Don't know about Aus, but here in NZ 5% is average for a beer. Most of the RTD's are 7.5-8% and above.

Gangster where do you get off calling me retarded?

I seem to recall that part of the US constitution is that people are free to hold and express their own views - this is the concept of free speech and free press. That is part of the concept of freedom.

If you actually took the time to read what I'd posted you'd realise that was expressing a viewpoint. And that viewpoint was my own perspective about the product and its potential consequences. I also gave the reasons for my viewpoint.

Now I don't expect you to agree to my viewpoint - and I respect that you may have a different viewpoint and you've given the reasons for your perspective on the product. And I can live with that - you're entitled to draw your own conclusion about anything you want. That's a right that I respect because I do believe in intellectual freedom.

However, because I don't agree with you doesn't justify labelling me as someone who possesses limited intellectual ability. I am well aware, possibly more than you, about the history of prohibition. And from my viewpoint the banning of this product has little to do with prohibition. I don't advocate the prohibition of alcohol and I never suggested this. I do support the banning of this product for similar reasons as the legislature in my country chose to restrict the sale of alcoholic iceblocks and placing limitations on the sale of alcohol to minors.

Having read your postings, I'd like to leave you with this thought. Laws are put in place that restrict the freedom to act in our society. These laws are generally put in place where society by way of the legislature has determined that the right of freedom to act is outweighed by the costs to society as a whole. This is why we consider certain acts to be a crime - in an extreme example the personal freedom to commit acts of murder is considered by society as a whole to not in the greater interests of the community. This is why laws were put in place to restrict the act of murder and also why there are mitigating circumstances which make it defensible.

Have a think about these concepts before you start name calling.

whoa relax buddy, i was saying that guy who isnt letting them produce that "Moo-joose" is retarded.

I respect your opinion, and wouldnt start "name calling" just because you have a different one than i do

I wasnt saying you want prohibition, I'm just saying that a new drink on the market isnt going to change anything at all... the only way to change the filled courts and other problems with drinking is prohibition, but as proven before that doesnt work.
