Re: assault rifle or shotgun?
I'm gun retarded, but IMO I'd rahter have the Rutger, seems like it'd be nicer to have, more shots, faster.

11-87, I own one.. What a gun! Easily one of the best shotguns i've ever owned/fired.

Re: assault rifle or shotgun?
Remingtons are fun. My grandfather has one, but I'd go with the Ruger. Not sure, but it seems a lot more fun. Besides, target practice with a Ruger sounds exciting.

Re: assault rifle or shotgun?
Go with the Ruger, btw. If you get bored target shooting, you can try to shoot clays with it.

Re: assault rifle or shotgun?
Go with the Mini-14. To me it's more challenging and satifsying to hit a target with a single bullet than with hundreds of buckshot. Firing a rifle accurately requires discipline and technique - it's so freaking cool to be able to put a bullet into a 1" bullseye at 75 yards. It makes you feel...deadly.
And in case you get too frustrated if you can't hit your target...a Mini-14 can be converted to full auto with an (illegal) conversion kit. Funny how the people here who aren't into guns call this a waste of money and penis extension and all that crap...to me it's a just fun hobby just like cars. |

Re: assault rifle or shotgun?
shotgun.. its way better for 'home defence' if the need arises.. nothing like standing in the middle of the night and having the crook hear the cocking of the shotty.

I'd say, screw the mini-14. If you're going to spend the money, might as well get a full blown M1A .30 calibre and all. Im saving my money for one of these baddies

Re: assault rifle or shotgun?
Amazingly enough, I have used both the Ruger and a variety of shotguns extensively.
Consider a 12 ga. pump action, it's versatile and cheaper than a semi, (at least it was the last time I looked. ) If you are serious about hunting birds or shooting clays, a side by side (double barrel with different chokes, ie modified on one side and full on the other) is best, but such a gun is specialized and not the best for home defence or deer, etc. 12 ga pumps are cheap, much cheaper than a new Ruger. Both Remington and Winchester make good inexpensive ones. The Ruger is fine for hunting or targets but is not quite as accurate as a good bolt action hunting rifle. However, unloading a clip at the deer running away from you substitutes nicely for fine accuracy. IMO get both. Get the Ruger first, it will be more fun. If money is really tight, get a shotgun first, at least you can begin to enjoy it until you save for a Ruger. BTW I've also used an M1, (jungle carbine) as shown above. The rounds are kind of expensive. They hit hard but many rounds are the 'full metal jacket' military surplus type. These whistle right through a deer without deforming, so unless you get a good head or chest shot, the deer just runs off just to expire later out of one's view. A good example is wickedly accurate though. |

he's chosen two very different guns to compare. unless you're going out to kill people on the street they don't share much in common in terms of useage. shotguns aren't the thing for long-range shooting and rifles aren't the thing for skeet (clay pidgeon) shooting. if you were into target shooting specifically then you'd compare two rifles. similarly if skeet shooting was more your thing you'd probably compare two shotguns. it's like comparing a motorbike with a car. apples and oranges.
