This wasn't LAPD it was UCPD - UCLA Campus PD. If it were LAPD there would have been about 15 cops and they would be beating him with their flashlights.

The student refused to show ID to the CSO's because he thought he was being racially profiled. I'm sure he thought the CSO's would apologize, go away and let him stay in the lab after he refused to show them ID.

Forum Post from student who was in the library that evening

More info...take it for what you will.

[...]Yes, I was indeed at Powell Library at approximately 11:30 on Tuesday night, and yes I did see the entire event as it went down.

Let me start off by saying that the guy DEFINITELY was asking to get his ass kicked. He was being extremely rude with the campus patrol guys (who are college students...this was before the real UCPD got called in). He was not complying with their requests to leave the premises, and he was definitely itching for a fight. I actually know the guy and a few of his friends, and I can tell you that he's the kind of guy that loves to make trouble.

Just as a little backstory, one of the quotes the guy has on his facebook (which he now has taken down) was "I like to find the most difficult solutions to the simplest of problems".

He definitely taunted the UCPD into behaving the way they did with him.

Edit: Many people have questioned the fact that the cops tazed him and asked him to get up, and tazed him again even though he shouldn't have the capability to get up. This was not the case here to my knowledge, because the cops were using their "drive-stun" method which administers less of a jolt than normal. I believe this because anyone who can ramble on about this being the patriot act and yell at the top of his lungs should have the capability of getting up.

LOL. Yeah, if it's true, that little gem won't help his case any.

It looked/sounded like a white guy to me in the vid. Were they hispanic/black cops or somethin?

Iranian-American student. I'm sure he's put up with his share of profiling lately. But the CSO's are the ones who confronted him originally. CSO's are just like volunteer students working night jobs.

that's what happens when you have improperly trained staff doing security jobs like that. Any pro would know that you should only play poke the piggy when you have gotten the target behind closed doors and out of sight.

Then life truly is a bitch. He should have been more aware of just how quickly things could get ugly for him for being in a place after hours without proper ID and making a stink about it.

Re: Student tasered at UCLA library for not having his ID 11-14-06 11:30pm

Saw an update on Headline News this morning that the security guard involved in the taseing incident is a LAPD officer with a history of "going a little overboard" for lack of a better term. He was cited 3 years ago for another incident, and after it was reviewed, it was recommended that he be terminated from his employment. I've tried to locate more info on the web to post a link, but at this time cannot locate anything yet.

Re: Student tasered at UCLA library for not having his ID 11-14-06 11:30pm

He is a former Long Beach PD officer who was fired 18 years ago because he had trouble writing reports and doing other administrative tasks.

Then he went to work for UCPD:
"The Times says that Officer Terrence Duren was named UCPD's Officer of the Year in 2001, but 11 years earlier almost got kicked off the force after choking someone out with a nightstick outside a fraternity. An admin hearing wound up suspending him for 90 days, instead, the Times reports. In 2003, Duren also apparently shot a homeless man who tried to grab his gun during a struggle in Kerckhoff Hall, the story says ...

Interestingly, it was Duren's shooting of Willie Davis Frazier that may actually have prompted UCLA to arm its officers with Tasers the following year."

...sounds like he's just doing his job to me.

ok... so now this brings up another slightly worrying point.
aren't people hired for these kind of jobs supposed to be vetted before taken on? If i was hiring someone for a security position who is an ex-cop, the first thing that comes to mind is; why is he an ex-cop?
