Re: 96 Firebird Gas Odor Problem.........

Wow, way old thread. I'll let it slide and keep it unlocked since the original poster is still inquiring about the same problem.. even though it's almost been a year since it was first posted. Also, the thread has been moved to the "Problem Diagnosis" sub-forum.

Re: 96 Firebird Gas Odor Problem.........

It may be the filler neck-tank junction. There was a GM recall about pinholes and small cracks appearing near this joint. I had a friend tell me about a smell of fuel as he waited in the car about 20 minutes. One thing to check for sure.

Re: 96 Firebird Gas Odor Problem.........

i have a 95 camaro and have a pretty bad gas odor as well... but it's not when my car is sitting. whenever i used to make a left turn hard i could smell it for a few seconds. now if i take a turn hard either way i can smell it STRONG for about a minute. any ideas on solutions ? ... on a college budget ?

Re: 96 Firebird Gas Odor Problem.........

I have a 99 firebird and had the the same problem of gas smell and car running rough at times. It was the fuel pressure regulator leaking and causing the problem.

Re: 96 Firebird Gas Odor Problem.........

did you ever notice your car kind of jumping when when you first start driving it ? the reason i ask is because if you did then i think that might be the problem . keep in mind this gas odor is very strong too and i can smell it in and outside.

Yes, on my 3.8L the fuel pressures regulator is located on top of the engine way in the back. A bit of a pain to get to.

Re: 96 Firebird Gas Odor Problem.........

thanks for the help . i found out what was wrong today and because i was gettin the same gas mileage they said that wasn't the problem and smoke out my fuel system for me. ended up being a bad fuel vent solenoid. so if anyone knows how to fix that feel free to inform. most likely just going to let a mechanic do it
