Re: Cold Air Intake Help

youd better hope your engine doesnt have the black box of death that came with my 98 cavy. stupid 2200SFI plastic intake plenum that connects the throttlebody and the breather hole to the air filter... its very restrictive, if you have this junk on there, i suggest you take it out, and run straightpipe from the TB to the filter, and then get a breather hole filter. you should see my setup, ive used an elbow pipe, a small mandrel-bent pipe from a previous short ram intake setup by BOMZ racing, and some classic heat ventilation flex-tube, with the filter attached at the end, and 3 rubber cupplers. The flex-tube is nice, since i can put the air filter wherever i need it to go.

one thing about cavy's, (maybe sunfires as well) they arent too responsive to an air intake alone, in fact it sometimes gets worse throttle response than if i had the stock rubber hosing and shit on it together. get rid of the stock muffler and take out the cat conv, and get a freeflow exhaust system combined with your intake, and youll start to notice some pretty nice response.

or... you could save your money and go custom turbo setup.

Hehehe, you love even the smallest gains, i envy you. When i got my first intake installed, i was dissapointed with its results, after i got my can installed, i was happy, becuz my car could sound ricer. After i got the performance header installed, things were good, i in fact have a video on my other computer of me racing an 89 camaro, and beating it, 0-60 in 8 seconds, stoplight action in ankeny. the camaro had a modified dual exhaust system, carb'd, chevy 305. you shoulda seen the look on his face after getting smoked by a naturally aspirated 2.2L OHV 4-cylinder 147HP cavalier! hehehe, but my ricer days are over, im selling the cavalier for 1200 and am acquiring a 1993 Nissan 300ZX 2+2 DOHC 3.0L 6-cylinder w/ VG30DETT swap. But trust me, you'll love it when you get the new exhaust, youll feel the push once you hit second gear, its sexy. If you get your car a serious diet, and you get quality N/A parts (unlike me), you may have a chance against chevy 350s, and some turbo'd 4's. Just make sure you dont dick around with oxygen sensors on your intake piping and exhaust system. It really screws up the timing of the tranny and causes engine knock.

ya...i cant wait to get my header and exhaust. i wanted to get my body kit, hood, and spoiler b4 i got the header or exhaust but now im second guessing it and im gonna split the cost of the header w/ my parents for xmas and then for my bday (february) ill prolly get my exhaust and my parents will pay for part of it. hell, it might be the only things im getting from them but it will save me some money in that case.

about the vid, i wanna see that, it sounds interesting. u think u will ever be able to post it here or email it to me? i really wanna see it.

i will try to find it, it be on another computer i think, so it may take me a few days, but ill see what i can do... as far as the black box of death goes, what i did was completely took off the box, and the throttle body spacer ring that expands the overall diameter to support the box, and ran a small elbow pipe with clamps attached, and then a mandrel-bent tube from an old air intake setup, with the O2 sensor attached, and then some aluminum flextube with the filter attached at the bottom. i have the filter located right after the engine front, and before the radiator, that small space allows colder air to sweep through from under the engine bay and the radiator towards the air filter. talk about ram air, this baby sucks it up no prob! i have a picture or two of the setup, right before i sell the biatch.

well the AEM intake should have certain specifications on what should be left in there or not. as far as i can tell, the only reason you'd want to leave that intake box in is if your considering to make it like a heat shield box, made specifically in certain cold air intake kits. BUT, i doubt anyone could get it to perform the same , let alone it would do you any good in the first place. I mean, come on, the thing looks damn ugly! (and its a pain to take out tho, look for a plastic screw or somethin that holds the box to the engine bay, located at the rear of the bay, i think its also attached to the fuse box, or close by)

the two red circles are where the intake box is secured (at least i think, its been a long time). the one located at the rear of the engine bay is the main secure location, its an oddly designed metal stump sticking out with a hole, surrounded with rubber, which holds a large portion of the intake box to the engine bay. this is the most difficult to take out, youll have to manuever the box at a certain angle to pull it out, took me some time and thinking with my dad to get rid of it.

Re: Cold Air Intake Help

..... isn't it not as good to put the intake near the radiator or in that area because of more heat? I mean....there's gotta be a reason why everybody including AEM and Injen put the filter behind the battery, as far away from that heat as possible.

...thats what im thinking also the way he has it the filter is pretty damn close to the header so that is also going to give off a bunch of heat. But hey whatever floats his boat I guess.
