Re: 1963 Corvette Grand Sport 005

Picking up this old thread. I have made some progress on this, started working on it again about one mount ago.

Started with turning some pulleys for the engine and some othe engine parts.

Engine was finished with the MCG PE set and resin transmission. The throttle linkage was a pain to do, but looks great when it's done.

Shaved all of the mountings off the frame and repaced them with PE parts, a really big upgrade!

The spare wheel was cut off along with the air jack. Made new mountings for the diff from pastic card. Still need some sanding.

Test fitting the spare wheel.

Engine test fitted.

Quick mock up to check the look of things.

Awesome. I was lucky to get this kit a while back. I'm not sure whether you will inspire me or frighten me off it forever! I suspect the latter...

Great stuff! Looking forward to watching an dlearning

I just got me one of these kits recently but a different version. I also have some HRM and MCG detailing kits to go with it.

Seems that your version has more AM p/e parts than mine though

Re: 1963 Corvette Grand Sport 005

I have this kit but an earlier version. I also purchased the HRM extra parts,A arms and exhaust headers. I also have the MCG PE detail set with the resin transmission. I will have to look at all this stuff again because I do not remember having the PE frame mounts. Where did they come from? Also your machined parts for the engine look excellent. That is something that I do not have the equipment to do.

That's a mean looking machine. And that applies for the car as well as for the engine. Nice detailing on the engine.

Great stuff.

Re: 1963 Corvette Grand Sport 005

If I am not mistaken this car the real one lives in Wheaton IL. I remember seeing it a one of the car shows they used to have down town in the summers. I also remember seeing it at Road America whenthe vintage car race was called the Chicago Historics.

Re: 1963 Corvette Grand Sport 005

It's been a wile since I posted any thing on this forum and in this thread in particular. So it might be about time to show that this car has not died, it's jut been a bit slow for some time but things have happened.

One thing I have been wanting to do for a long time with this model is "real" breaks. So I turned some steel brake disc and removed the calipers from the plastic parts. I also drilled the wheel nuts and threaded them, so I can remove the wheels.

Rear end put together, the frame have been painted black. I also added some brake lines.

Made a new battery box and added a new air jack.

Everything together, looks about right.

Right now it sitts on four wheels.

I finished the front end, but I might take i apart and change it some now after seeing torinobradleys build.

Next thing to do is mate the engine and frame and add the oil pump for the diff. I have been looking but haven't found any really good match. I might go for the fuel pump from an AMT 70 Camaro BM. Then I need to finnish my own PE parts some day.

Re: 1963 Corvette Grand Sport 005

Awesome! What more could you guys ask for? Two Grand Sport builds!

This one was an inspiration for finally starting on my build!

I like the idea of the removable tires and spindles and may still go for it but I lack the ability to turn my own parts (except for chucking plastic in a drill and filing/sanding it to shape, which I plan to do for my tie rods and the little bullet lights on the back of my #004).
The oil pump looks like 1/2 of the fuel pump on the pictures I have seen. Might have a look at that and consider that for an option.
