Yep, his name is H.R. Giger. a surrealist. I quite like some of his work, but I agree some of it is quite disturbing. He also designed the Alien in 'Species'.

the alien in species was definetly one of the best,

As far as aliens that look like aliens, definetly Yoda or Jabba the Hutt

The "Aliens" alien was not completely his. He was hired to design them for the first movie. then the film studio had their designers change them and didn't consult Giger much at all for the other movies.

hence the different heads between the first and second movie. The first one was smooth whereas the "Aliens" one was ribbed.
