For some of us it isn't pointless. I'm doing a trip to Florida next month, it does help to know how far I can safely go on a full tank. If I get 350 miles to a tank, I can plan on stopping every 300 miles for gas. That way I don't have to incessantly watch the gauge and can pay more attention to things going on around me.

Incessantly watch the gauge? I think one glance every 15 minutes is getting a bit obsessive.
