Remember,when you get the car, you can send it back to McLaren to have it made brand new. 038 may have had high miles but it also had a lot of cool history and had all the stuff put in by the p/o so that the current owner wouldn't have to dish out the cash for it. I'm sure Mr. K took a hit on that car. I say the new owner is a lucky guy, whoever he is.

I think their pricing estimate for this particular car is about half a million too high. The car needs to be repainted, has none of the upgrades of others cars that have sold in the range of their target price, and has some other issues that can't be seen from the outside based on what I have been told. Only the car's rarity will ensure it's value until someone spends the money to have it cleaned up.

I could end up being wrong - maybe it will set a sales record on the 19th - but it's certainly not the finest example of an F1 to come along in that price range.

Didn't that car have a lot of recent work done to it as well? I think it had a new fuel bladder and some other regular F1 maintenance items.


As for 014, remember that the price listed doesn't include the commission. It's 10% for this auction.

I wouldn't know what buyer's premium would get tacked on to the hammer price.
Inclusive of the premium, however, there is no way whatsoever that this car would only fetch half a million less than the estimated range - unless it has been seriously damaged in a crash or through gross abuse.
If the car only needs the dated items (fuel tank, seals, boots) plus the upgrades of radiators, shift linkage and a/c, all that would cost no more than $150,000 to put right - assuming that the whole lot had been neglected since the car left the factory.
Seeing as how the car has been federalized, however, you would think that at least some of the basic maintenance items had been seen to. You can't federalize without running the engine fairly extensively (that is, unless you forged your documents).
I too have heard that the car has had a few issues, but certainly not of that sort of magnitude.
You may find that it would have sold long ago if the vendor had behaved differently with potential buyers.

As for the various add-ons that mini-magic has listed for the 038 - and I know that you're not advocating them, m-m, you're just listing them to share with us - the great majority of owners would consider all those gadgets and doodads to be foolish crap, and they would pay LESS for a car that had been defiled with them.
Yes, some people would value that stuff, but most people buy an F1 for its purity and simplicity, not for a bunch of electronic toys that are going to be outdated soon anyhow.
If you want the electronic toys, you go for a Veyron or that sort of thing.
The mechanism for the F1 removeable steering wheel is a thing of beauty (although not in orange, for God's sake!), but most of the rest would get thrown away or redone.

Couldn't agree with you more... some of the stuff is cool, but a 100GB Mp3 player and TV screens!? and is it really that hard to get into the driver's seat, that a removable steering is necessary?

I have seen this car several times--it is way cool don't get me wrong
but there are places in the paint that are cracked and compaired to
Cliffs F1 that they sold right away its not in the same league. I just dont
see it going for as high as they want but at Pebble Beach all the heavy hitters coem out to play so dropping close to $2 million could happen.

That could be, but let's remember that at least half the F1s that change hands are painted in a new color by the new owner anyhow, so in many cases that expense is factored into the market price.
How many folks would keep 38 that ugly orange?
Some would, but a lot would start their new ownership of it by gutting out the toys, repainting the exterior, retrimming the interior, stipping the orange paint off the cam covers, etc.

If the cracks in the paint are indicative of deeper problems stemming from neglect and lack of use while the car sat around in a hot humid environment for eight years, then this car might possible be damaged goods.
Might that sort of treatment have caused delamination of the carbon fiber? I'm not in a position to know, but it would take that sort of thing to knock 500 grand off the current market price. (And one would think that SVAG wouldn't have bought it in the first place if the condition were that bad.)
My understanding was that the car had a bunch of modest issues, but it was basically sound.
