Re: favorite year for the GTO?

It's plain to see, the mid-models get the nod. The '65-'67 seems to be the most popular. It's nice to know GTO is still popular among the younger set!

I applaud HotRdChevyz's comments. He's exactly right, except for one minor detail... Potential. I have seen the "fastest LS in the world" (their billing, not mine) in an '05 GTO body, 6.0 LR, twin-turbo, methanol. 7.19 @ 198 (Summer of '06, have since heard it made a 6.90s pass). There are several '66-70ish GTOs in the 7s without adders. Marty Palbikin went 6.80s in the mid '90s with a turboed 400 Pontiac in a '70. Also, dude, it's a minor amount of work to make those early '70s cars ROCK!

What this means is, no matter HOW good one engine is, or could be, another, diplacing a bunch more, will make more power. I anxiously await the results of an LS7 (modern one, not the BBC) project I know of, which has a blower. We're also waiting for about 10 blown/alcohol Pontiacs out there nearing completion. I suspect we're going to see some 5 second cars out of that passle. Most are "pro mod" style, but a couple are REAL NHRA TA/FCs.

Stay tuned! Pontiacs in the Park will be the next "big" meet in the Pontiac "world". Last weekend in May! Virginia Motorsports Park, Dinnwiddie, VA. Most of those aforementioned cars (including ours, "The Drunken Injun") will be there!

Well, it worked for Warren Oates, in "GTO's" worldview. I imagine "Two Lane Blacktop" is one of your favorite films.

To be honest I've never seen the movie. I am a fan because I own a 1970 GT-37. Do you know when the movie you referred to was made? I may have to check that out.

1971.
Look here for a good article on the flick.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Lane_Blacktop

It's worth watching. But don't expect a car movie on the modern sense. Unlike todays movies, this one was filmed entirely on-location, with virtually no special effects. It was intended to be minimalist, unpolished and realistic. Many scenes are shot with a single camera, with long takes and minimal editing. It has an art movie feel, and an existentialist message.

It stars 3 well-known celebrities, but you would never know it by watching it. Warren Oates does a fine job of acting. It must be one of the few flicks made where 2 well-known musicians are placed in lead roles who never sing a note.

Re: favorite year for the GTO?

Yup, Warren Oates and his "Phase 4 Ram Air 455"... (trying to keep from laughing TOO hard... Hollywood...) James Taylor was driving the '55.

In a related issue, on another site specific to Pontiacs, just last week, there was a "poll" about what the "best" GTO was. The late models weren't included. '65 got the most votes, with '70 only a couple behind. They were far and away, the most popular. That being said, it doesn't really matter. ANY GTO is better than NO GTO...

Welcome aboard, goatgirl! When the Chevy boys give you a hard time about "the Pontiac", remind them: GTO did NOT get a reputation from LOSING!!

Re: favorite year for the GTO?

goatgirl, if you do get a chance to see "Two Lane Blacktop", you'll find Warren Oates' multiple life stories fascinating. He gives a different background to each hitchhiker he picks up, changing the details to impress the stranger of the moment, and probably himself.

I predict you'll enjoy the one line he always throws out about his GTO: "FIVE-HUNDRED foot-pounds of torque!"

Re: favorite year for the GTO?

1965! I had a 67' GTO as my first car as a teenager, a 66' GTO in my thirties but I've always wanted a 1965 (the year of my birth). I guess it's the style of the 65 and the clean lines. I just purchased my first 65 goat yesterday after seeing the sweet 64' GTO on that new show Memphis Beat...good show too! Should have it next week and I'll see what I got. Bought it off eBay for $8600 and the body looks real good and straight with new paint. Has a non matching motor and seller was not really sure what he had...just said it was fast. Doesn't matter to me as I'll be changing it out in a couple months after I blow it up. Then I'll put something decent in it. I like to drive my goat and watch everyone watching my car! When is the last time you saw a 65' goat on the road? Awesome. 64's are nice too but there is a lot to fix first. 65's were a big improvement. 66 & 67's are real nice classics. 68's were the car of the year and a complete redesign and were beautiful. 69's, 70's, 71's & 72's were all cool as long as you address the power issues on the later models. 73's had a face only a mother could love but is still a rare car today albeit mostly because no one wanted one. 74's in my opinion got a bad rap with the change to the ventura body...though I must admit it was not my style. I still would not be embarrassed to be seen in one! Don't care about the new GTO's at all, though I understand the performance was good. Too bad they didn't use the old body styles with the modern technowledgies available today. We wouldn't have to drive them in a straight line. Talk about a tiger! Enjoy whatever goat you have. Just have a goat! Thanks, Steve

Re: favorite year for the GTO?

You are correct, FOZ! Don't know how much bigger or heavier the '66-'67s may or may not have been than the '64-'65 body, but the earlier ones LOOK smaller and lighter, therefore faster and meaner.

The '65 IMO was an upgrade because of the added Pontiac styling touches, and will always be the peak for me. And for some reason Torq-Thrust wheels look better on this year than any other Goat.

Re: favorite year for the GTO?

The 1965 GTO is my favorite I like the body shape and style. But I still love the 66-67 GTO's too. But I'm not a huge fan of the new GTO's.
