Re: Any way to get at the oil filter other than from underneath the car?
Floor jack, huh? Interesting - I haven't heard that term
In fairness to whoever invented the names, trolley jack (for its wheels) seems to be a bit more descriptive than "floor jack" considering that - basically - ALL jacks sit on "the floor" when they're working.

Re: Any way to get at the oil filter other than from underneath the car?
If you use a trolley jack for $30 you also need to buy some jack stands for another $20 to rest the car on when you are under it. I like the trench idea but make sure you have proper shoring on the sides. I have also used the curb idea that Jeff suggested in a pinch.

...yeah, one of those things..like my wife (from Michigan) always says "ink pen"...isn't that kinda redundant? Is there another kind?

Believe me, you don't have to be from Michigan to refer to an "ink pen!" I have a FLorida Cracker friend (4th generation Floridian) who says that. Yup - redundant.

You could install an oil filter relocation kit if you really wanted to.
