Re: What's the average gas mileage for a ranger?

I average 24-27 city/highway mix. 2001 2.3L 5 speed 4X2 with 30's (yes on a 2 wheel they're just for looks ) before put the tires on i'd get 26-30....it's all in how you drive.

Re: What's the average gas mileage for a ranger?

Uhm. My '83 gets 14 mpg with a bad fuel mixture and faulty idle air control. My '89 doesn't do much better I don't think. I drove about 30 miles and it used an eighth of a tank.

Re: What's the average gas mileage for a ranger?

Hardcore Ranger driver here - I've owned five since 84. I got 18-28mpg depending on the engine and tranny. The 2.3 4cyl with 5 speed manual got the best, and the 4x4 V6 with auto got the worst. My current 2007 w 2.3L 4cyl auto gets 22. Adding acetone gains 10%. Driving style makes the most difference. Accessories like a/c didn't seem to matter. Load didn't seem to matter. I've considered canopies for windstreaming, but use the bed a lot. Highway gets the best. Desert gets the next. City and mountain driving the worst.

Re: What's the average gas mileage for a ranger?

Sorry, dunno. Assuming you've done all the usual things - full tune up, had your emissions checked, and there are no noticable driveability problems pointing towards a specific culprit, then it's time to check into excessive load. ie: friction - stuck brakes, wheel bearings, diff, and tranny in that order.

Re: What's the average gas mileage for a ranger?

I have a 2004 ranger 3.0 5 speed. engine manual transmission. I get about 22 miles city and 27 highway. I have the KN filter and am pretty light footed most of the time. My previous 1995 4.0L 5 speed got about 19-20 city and 24-25 hwy.

Re: What's the average gas mileage for a ranger?

...

1994 Mazda B4000 5-speed. Essentially the same as a 4x4 Ranger with 4.0 engine. About 17 in city and up to 20-21 highway, good for a 4x4. The old EPA rating was 18/22, different than the identical '94 Ranger (17/22) for some unknown reason. I don't drive it much (59k miles on it) and I'm selling it for a large gas hog to pull my camper. Sadly.

Re: What's the average gas mileage for a ranger?

1994 4x4 Ext. Cab 4.0L/5 spd.
158000 miles, 31" mud tires, 3" body lift
15-16 on winter fuel
17-19 on summer fuel

Keep your oil changed
Keep your air cleaner changed
Keep tires at the proper psi
Run Motorcraft double platiumn plugs; Motorcraft wires
Change fuel filter every 15K miles
Keep MAF sensor clean
Change O2 semsors if needed
Get all codes cleared up
Don't drive it like you stole it

Basically, just stay on top of regular maintenence (this includes changing tranny and diff fluid) using quality parts and be easy on the go pedal. Thats the only way to get the best mileage and performace out of it.

My 95 gets 22-24 mpG ALL AROUND. Most of my driving is highway (45mph)
95, 2.3, 2wd, 5 spd

Funny thing though, last week it threw some codes and now Im getting just as you said, 16-17 mpg. It threw an egr code, so more than likely, check that system. Before that, it even got 25.7mpg on a fill-up one time !!

But yea, waaay too low.

Hope this helps
