Re: WIP: Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM 2000: Original Tiele

Looking very good, excellent decalling work.

If I might ask, isn't the front end supposed to be painted TS-50?

Re: WIP: Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM 2000: Original Tiele

Looks great.
You inspired me to go and get one, which I started last night!

What was the base color you used?
The instructions say Insignia white, but when looking at reference pics I am not so sure.

Regarding your decalling over complex curves question.
Soften the decal with water and then Micro Sol, apply some(not much) heat from a hair dryer gently make some relief cuts into the decal at strategic points, and then proceed to work it around the complex curve with a moist Q-tip. When fully dry, touch up cut sections with compatible paint.

Hope this helps.

Yeah... I kinda missed that step. I have flat blue which I might just brush on there and hope for the best.

I used Testor's Classic White from a spraycan. I had it, and it was cheap

I wouldn't recommend the flat blue, I don't think the paint will come near matching the color of the decals.

You may want to try clear coating over the decals, then allowing the clear to fully cure, then EXTREMELY carefully mask the body and airbrush the mica blue on, then even more EXTREMELY carefully remove the masking.

Are you planing to clear coat it? What with?

The way I see it (if you're thinking of doing the blue on the nose), I'd recommend one of two options:

1- Clear it with X22, and then mask it and paint with a mix of X(metallic blue) and X(chrome silver). Shouldn't take much mixing, and I'm sure you can find a good mix of the two that will match the decal color.

2- Get yourself some CobraColors UltraClearGloss, and clear with it. Then, mask and spray the TS-50. This is of course the easy way to color match, but it means you have to spray laquers over decals. I would much rather lightly airbrush Cobracolors clear instead of TS-13 out of a spray can over decals. The trick to spraying laquer without ruining a decal job is to put the first few layers down very lighty- no problem with an airbrush, but something I've never really managed with a spray can .

Edit: Ah, CobraColors. Good stuff. Good luck!

Keep us posted, following with interest!

Re: WIP: Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM 2000: Original Tiele

Looks like I will go and pick up some Insignia White then.

What's the SMS PE set like? Is it worth it?
I was thinking of doing it OOTB, but an now thinking of the possibilities.... Why oh why do I do this to myself?

Does anyone have any engine reference pics? I have nothing on this area.

I would put some clear over your decals and then put the TS-54 Light Metallic Blue over the front end.

I am a big fan of the SMS PE kit. I'd say it's worth it for the hood-mounted star alone, as I think it looks a lot better than the plastic thing, but all the parts are worth it, to be honest. It's a nice, easy kit to work with.

I've never seen those decals before! They're awesome. Now I need to look for them....

First off, having you, Mr. Ferrari, following with interest is an honor and a privilege. Second, I just found some Fuji Blue Pearl (I'm a Cobra Colors whore, I admit it!) and I think I'll use that instead of TS-50.

Alright, after two fairly light layers of clear, here are some pictures.

You and me both.

So you're using CobraColors clear over the decals? Hows it working, any issues? Looks like its going OK... I considered using it on the 635, but I decided to wait and try it on a build that I know I can get replacement decals for if it acts up. I've suspected it can be done, but I've been burned too many times by TS13. X22 for now, but seeing you do it does boost my confidence.

Any chance of getting some bigger pics of th body? 400x300 is kinda small.

Well, here's the deal: The clear was a success! There was a little bit of curling on some of the decals which hadn't set properly, but all and all (and by which I mean 98%) the model came out really well. I'm going to put a couple more coats on, as the first two were very fine, and these will be more protective than for the gloss value.

I'll upload the smaller pictures to Imageshack; for whatever reason, Photobucket likes to resize pictures to the most random sizes.

Here are some outdoor pictures, and I've used ImageShack.us so the pictures are nice and big!
