geo metro bad milage 33mpg help help!!!

cool,, thanks for the link..... i watched my injector spray and it is fine,,, very nice pattern.... one thing i thought of this morning, could a bad lifter or a couple bad lobes on a camshaft do that???? i know some s.b. chevys had that problem.....i have checked again my fuel psi (fine) and vac hoses and for vac leaks.... still no leaks,,, i talked to a friend yesterday, and he is now having the same troubles as i am having.... he can't figure it out either....i am going to check the cat and make sure that isn't plugged ,, but i am positive it isn't......

Well, metros dont have lifters, they have a hydraulic adjuster "puck". When they go bad, they make one hell of a racket. A bad cam would make quite a bit of noise too.

I'm really suprised nobody suggested replacing the PCV valve yet. That can make a BIG difference in mileage. Also check your vacuum hoses, and make sure they're all on tight. Make sure the air filter housing seal(where the plastic meets the intake manifold) is on there good.

Ya know, your VALVE timing may have jumped 1 or 2 teeth...that would explain a lot....worth checking....also...check for a plug in your exhaust system.....good luck

Hey guys, someone in a thread of several months ago suggested a neat way
to look for vacuum hose leaks.

Take a propane torch and put a long flexible hose over the tip (unscrew the
burner tip) and place a long copper tube on the end like a wand.

Start the car - let it idle.

Open the burner valve and slowly move the copper tube tip around the Vacuum
hoses and connections.

If the car changes idle speed, there is a vacuum leak and the propane is
sucked into the engine and changes the idle speed & sound.

Easy as Pie! Completely non-dangerous!

well looks like i have this problem fixed... turned out to be a bad pcv valve.... i have never had a bad pcv valve cause milage problems,,, anyways thanks to everyone for the help..

tech++ I am sure 80% that the problem you are having is caused by bad MAP sensor it happened to me a while ago , MAP sensor still was reading good but was tricking the ECU to think that car is going ,,faster" than idle thats why the problem is not so bad when you are going over 25-45mph, change it and you will be ok, is not an injector problem.
You can find a used MAP sensor for around 20- 25$ used on Ebay, if you don t find let me know.

I had your same Problem with my 96, i was also getting 33 miles to the gallon, Here is what i did. Changed the wires, installed timing belt, laser timed the car, new tires, new plugs, new distributor cap, new distribitor button, gauged all the tires. changed oil to 5 w 30 changed oil filter etc....

Still 33 mpg. I was mad!

however. i did this.
filled up.
drove exactly 50 miles back to the gas station. filled up again.
wrote the gallons i used down! "This was KANGAROO GAS"

Ran the tank Dry, went to "shell station" filled up!
reapeted the proccess, i got 50 some odd mpg.

"I no longer get Kangaroo Gas, "Shell only"...

well i thought i had the problen nailed down to a bad pcv valve, but after i changed the pcv valve the milage went up to 45 mpg,,, then back down to 33mpg... pcv valve is still working free and clear.... maybe a bad map senser , i see the thread above said he had similar trouble.... does yours sputter and idle rough??? mine sure does,,, plus it has a hard time going to high idle when it is cold.....
