Possibly mild variances in Gr. A rules used here in Australia?

Anyway, awesome build, I had this kit once a long time ago when I was quite young, and of course wasted it, long ago consigned to the bin...

Re: Eighties Contest Entry: BMW 635CSi

Thanks everyone! I'll do my best to keep the progress coming along. But having this in the background, along with the 360, maybe helps explain my glacial pace on the F40 and Mythos lately.

My work bench has taken the appearence of a parking lot. But now I know I've reached my limit- no more than 4 full engine builds active at once!!

So I guess I'm not the only one who was intimidated by the scheme. Makes me feel a bit better, I guess. I was kind of surprised when Tamiya reissued this one a couple of years ago that none seemed to get built up. Maybe mine will inspire others....

mickbench- Yeah, that's why I have a bunch of older Beemers in my stash! I have nothing newer than a 1st gen M Roadster. M1s, M3s, M5, M6, 850.... Now if we can just decide on '70s or Tobacco for the next contest, I'll do an M1!

malscar- True, I am doing the '85 Spa scheme. I had no idea what the pic I posted above was, but it was the first decent pic of an Original Tiele scheme that I could find. Oviously the wheels, trim, and external lights are different. Here are a couple of the Spa '85 car I'm doing.

I have no idea what the story on the side trim is- just that I've seen pics of Original Tiele 635s both with it and without it, but never having the Xray scheme applied over the trim.

klutz_100- Yeah, I am going to have to do an 850, aren't I?

OK everyone, decals are coming soon. I'll try to give it all the progress it (and you guys) deserve!

MPWR, you´re doing nice builds, but your posts also set another level of accomplishment.

Don´t know, why I post that, they´re just so well structured and grammatically correct! Something we don´t see too often on here!

By the way, I was not being sarcastic!

True, what godfather23 said... MPWR, you're doing an amazing job already, and the progress has only just begun!

Best of luck completing this one on time, though luck is something you hardly need (what with all your skills and that... )

Re: Eighties Contest Entry: BMW 635CSi

Yeah, I've only just begun...

Decals- Pt. 1

Tamiya rather logically broke up the decals in two stages; first the 'see through' mechanicals grahphics, then the sponsor markings. It leaves the hard part for the very beginning- oh well, I guess if it gets screwed up, you haven't already invested hours and hours of work on it.

I've been going at it with lots and lots of Micro-set (the weak stuff!), and my latest decaling innovation:

It's a coffee mug warmer! Keeps the decal water in the bowl nice and warm- to make the decals a bit easier to work with. Looking forward to trying it on my next CF nightmare (which reminds me, it's geting to be time to tackle the F40 interior.... ).

So, here are the results- so far, so good!

I started with the tri-colored M stripes on the nose. Getting these to work around the kindey grilles seemed to be the most unlikey trick I would be faced with. I was prepared from the beginning to strip them of and paint them on, but to my utter amazement, they worked! Just needs a little trimming to uncover the rest of the chrome work.

After the nose, everything else was not quite easy, but managable. the markings around the fenders took some serious persuading, mostly to get all the trapped air out from under them.

Better than I could have reasonably hoped- this decal sheet after all is at least ten years old. If only all of my decaling adventures could go this well! Between persuading reticent markings and allowing for drying time, it took nearly a full week.

I love the way this scheme looks. I've been half tempted to just leave it like this, and not cover parts up with sponsors and stuff. But, I think I'll like the completed scheme even more. Nice at least to have some pics of it to enjoy.

Phew!

Next, onto Decals, Pt. 2....

Well done, man! It's a shame we can't get a Original Tiele photoshoot, eh?

Decals looks stellar.

Well I don't know about you Europeans, but here our entire society is based upon the ready availibilty of copious supplies of hot coffee and cheap petrol! Interrupt the supply of either and we get really grumpy (and start looking for someone to invade ). By the way, is Poland naturally rich in either coffee or petrol?

In December, you can find coffee mug warmers here in the local grocery store, already in generic gift wrap, ready for exchange at your office Xmas party!

Besides, I'm rather certain it was made in China!

MPWR,

Nice idea with the coffee mug warmer. Can I ask you a question.

How much difference does it make? Does it make the decals significantly softer and conform better to the body without using microsol?

Winston

Actually, it's kind of hard to say. I don't often do elaborate schemes like this, so I don't have much to compare it to. Maybe it was the key to doing it successfully, or maybe it was just a lucky talisman. Either way I can't complain, as they went on!

Maybe a better test will be next time I use SMS CF on something- I at least now how it handles usually.

Yeah, it is a bit. And there aren't nearly enough Original Teile schemed kits for a meet. Shame, as they do look great. I'll be keeping an eye on your build, too.

Better that than cheap petrol!

No, just an acidic sense of humour (also used to strip paint quite effectively)
