Based on what information? Advertising is not how you base your opinion of a company.

They are absolutely JUNK filters.

Any other filter other than a Fram will be leaps and bounds better than the orange can of shit.

Re: Synthetics

Well, this claim has been posted all over the internet. Mainly by a disgruntled former employee and a "test" (observation only) by a layman. Commercial labs that have tested the filter have indicated some of Frams to be very good and some not to be good. (There were others far worse.) These commercial tests were were done on performance and observation. That being said, it wouldn't be my first choice of filters, but it is hardly "junk". It is the largest selling filter in the world.

That is bullshit, it is well known across all automotive boards and information sources that fram filters are cardboard ended junk with 1/2 the media as a standard filter from any other manufacturer.

GM also has a TSB out on a 4.3L and that you should use a Fram with it seeing the construction is so shitty, it will allow the Anti-drainback valve to not seal, let the oil drain back to the pan and have the end cold start dry knock on our engines.

How I will never know seeing it has about 1/2 the filter media as any other filter and its construction will allow unfiltered oil past the filter element and back into the engine.

Anyone claiming Fram are a good filter is just being ignorant.

Re: Synthetics

I've seen the mileage increase in my Saturn when i use synthetics in the engine. Not a lot but measurable.
Also, when I put synthetics in gearboxes and differentials, the mileage goes up. And years ago, with Jeep, if you bought the trailer towing package, it included synthetics in all the gearboxes. (I forget what year I read that.) The snythetics are thinner for the amount of protection they give, so this is at least one way they improve economy.

Re: Synthetics

Synthetics make sense as long as you can let go of the 3,000 oil change interval that’s been drilled into our heads since we were kids. Most drivers still can’t believe that you can go 5,000- 7,500 miles between oil changes.

Also, I’ve heard nothing but bad things about fram filters as well.

Many modern cars use oil change intervals as long as 30,000 km (18,750 miles).

Some of the info about Fram filters come from one of their production engieers. The filters was actually produced by Honeywell and among others there was no quality control what so ever.

Some synthetic oils, for example polyolester is a so called frictionmodifier, it create a thin film on the components in the engine which reduce the friction. Mainly in areas of boundary layer, or mixed film lubrication such as the gear train.
