Re: P1404

Last time I looked at mine it was leaking a bit from the input seal, axle seals, and cover. I still havent check my breather to see if its clogged and causing it to pressurize. I will be checking it soon though when I change fluid again after being underwater.

One of my coworkers was nice enough to point out the fresh oil under the front of mine a couple weeks ago. Now I get to track down and fix a leak on the engine. I've never had a vehicle that leaked before.

Re: P1404

I cleaned my breather last fall because it was rusted up. I checked again and it was closed up again so I ordered a new one from St. Charles. It was less than $5. Definately worth it.

I think I found an EGR from a junkyard for $50. I'm about to order it.

Re: P1404

Well, I was about to order an EGR from a junkyard today and the CEL went off, so that's good. Hopefully the thing stays off.

Re: P1404

If you know someone with a Tech II or Waekon EGR tester, you can have the valve checked rather than replace it on a hunch. You can command the EGR open and watch it to see if it moves of not. There is no other easy way to check pintle position feedback from the EGR valve to the PCM.

Re: P1404

The circuit board and wiper contact points internal to the EGR valve get dirty and/or burnt over time . IIRC, the post I saw on disemboweling the valve and repairing the 'paths' on the circuit board (with solder or solder pen) was on planetisuzu.

Re: P1404

that procedure looks a bit out of my league. The CEL is still off, so hopefully it stays that way. If not, I'll order from a junk yard. I may try the procedure after I get a new one.

Re: P1404

stupid CEL, GRRRRR.

I'm ready to admit it will not fix itself. I'll order the new EGR tomorrow.

Bowtie, I should go get it checked, but for the cost of the diagnostics, I can get a used EGR. I'm hoping this will take care of it.

I keep looking at mazda 3's. I like them, just don't want to spend the money.

Re: P1404

Yup the 3's are nice. My wife drives one. 30-35 MPG, so it is our road trip (or any trip we are both in the car) car.

Re: P1404

Those are really nice looking cars. I think the ford fusion looks cool too. I do miss the ~11gal fillups of my 2001 nissan sentra. Just not enough room for us. The only thing I hated about the small cars we owned was the feeling of sitting on the ground. Never liked falling into them and then hauling your arse out. $3/gal+ we'll have to learn to like it!

Re: P1404

I'm starting to see more and more of those M3, as well as the M6's - I like both of them.

What's the set-up of the engine? And is it an easy one for maintenance, or does it require a lot of maintenance between 40-100k miles??

Re: P1404

Well the good thing is that it doesn't have a timing belt, but has a timing chain.

The one goofy thing is the fuel filter is in the tank! There is no recomened interval for changing it.

As for the setup, it has a 160 hp and torque .... not sure. We have 5 speed so it is pretty zippy. Our previous car was a 1992 Prelude Si (non-vortec, 93 was the first year of the vortex), and I think it had a bit more get up and go to her (also rated at 160hp).

Yeah, you see this more and more now. Our TB has the 'in-tank' filter as well. They are usually a big sock on the fuel pump p/up. Not much of a chance of them plugging which is nice. You swap them out when you change the pump (hopefully not before!). Our 2001 sentra had the sock.

Re: P1404

I heard the 3 has an odd type of oil filter. It is not the simple screw on type.

I am going to inquire about a lease, probably not going to do it, I still like the Rodeo, but I'll be honest, gas is a factor now.

The CEL has gone back off. I'm still going to check out the J/Y.

Re: P1404

Yes, a bunch of vehicles use a drop in oil filter now. It's basically a plastic cannister with a threaded lid. Un-screw the cap, pull out the old & drop in a new oil filter element. Sealed trannys, drop in oil filters, maint free everything..
