The torque on hand is enough to move a 2800lbs car with driver.

why would you compare the S2000 to the audi TT?? the TT is slow (compared to it's competitors) you should have compared it to an M-Roadster or a Porsche Boxster

Yeah the choices are getting pretty tough. I have a new M3 this week and our long-term Boxster S just went back to Porsche. Both are wonderful. The C32 I had last week was awesome as well! All three handle like slot cars, go like hell, look good and are relatively attainable.

The Z06 is an incredible thrill ride but so is the S2000. How does anybody chose?

I will let everyone in on a little secret: the Z8 isn't anywhere near as much fun to drive as all the other cars I listed above.

Later.

Thumbs up

BTW, mlafave, I really liked the "sheet over mechanicals" metaphor for the appearance of the S2000.

Thanks for the kudos.

Having the gauges in the centre is odd especially when you look at the gauges and, um, there aren't any where you expected. In my capacity at World of Wheels I got to do some of the Z8 performance testing and the gauge placement made the drag strip stuff a little difficult. Strangely the similar placement in the Prius is very easy to get used to. Go figure.

With my boss behind the wheel (Editor Jeremy Sinek) the Z8 squirted to sixty in 4.5 seconds and leveled the quarter mile in 12.2 @ 110 mph. We Use a stalker radar gun so these are pretty accurate and consistent with the big mags.

If you've tested a 360 Modena, what was your 0-60 time? it varies so much from mag to mag. c & d was like 4.5 but MT was 3.9 and there are tons in the middle. this has always eaten at me. so if you could clarify it that would be awesome.

sorry haven't tested a Modena. we encounter the same frustrations concerning performance numbers. while they are often very close sometimes we just can't seem to reproduce the US mags' numbers.

for example the best we could wring out of a broken in RSX Type-S was a pathetic 8 second 0-60 run. I've been doing this for a few years and my boss has been doing it for 28 years so technique isn't the problem. how Car and Driver got a 6.1 is beyond me - note I'm not saying that they didn't get that number it just would not have been possible with the car we tested.

I would think that wringing out a consistent 0-60 time in a high revving, high HP, low torqe car is pretty tough. I know it is tough in my S2000. The modena is pretty much a grown up version of the S2000; having roughly the same HP to torque ratio and a similar redline. Compared to other cars with 400+HP ( 911 turbo for example) it is probably pretty hard to be consistently very fast. The RSX I have no idea about, but I remember Motor Trend and R&T both got high 6's at first with the S2000 0-60 and now both have registered 5.2 and 5.3 respectively. I have personally seen a 5.3, 13.8 run in an S2000...so I know it it possible!!

The flip side is that reproducing under 5-secong runs in a Z06 for example is easy and most owners will do it often. In the S2000 I sure as heck wouldn't be performing 7000 rpm+ clutch drops with MY own car but that's just me.

The whole mess serves to discredit acceleration numbers as any meaningful measure of performance. An S2000 could take 7 seconds to hit sixty but that doesn't change the fact that at sustained speed it is incredibly fast and that it is fun to drive.

As an aside: just finished a week with the E46 M3 and I think it it the most awesome car I have driven to date. Incredibly fast and grippy and neutral when pushed past the limit. Goergeous and practical to boot. Awesome!!!

*Onto third bucket of drool*

Now my 1/18th scale model S2000 somehow doesn't seem adequate. *sigh*

Good article though, I've saved it. Gotta love the F20C. 9000rpm redline? That's something I didn't know. Learn more every day.
*Returns to looking at his 1/18th size S2000*

The Audi, on the other hand, is one of the greatest styling statements to ever roll off an assembly line.

umm, i don't think so... i think the design of the TT is the worst Audi has done...

sub 5's in the Z06 are easy....since it is really a 4 sec car, but trying geting a 4.0 second 0-60. I can easily pull off 6.2's in my S2000...it is the 5.3's that are tough

i think that orange interior you saw is just a photo error. the sunshine gave it a reflection causing the photo to show an orange rather than red
