I highly recommend GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) - that's an excellent series. It's not too goofy (like some anime can be), and has just enough seriousness to keep you engaged with the characters. Plus, Onizuka is one of the coolest characters in anime (and the English voice actor is Steven Blum - the same guy that does the voice of Spike in Cowboy Bebop - bonus!).

watching anime with english dub is horrid.

Goldenboy is good for laughs.... its perverse, but incredibly funny.
