I have a cheapo scan tool that I use. But you can remove the neg batt terminal and pump the brake three times to accomplish the same thing.

Re: 1997 Chevy Lumina Service Engine Soon light

doing that won't fix the problem, so it still would not pass my state inspection. Is it cheaper to replace the 02sensor or the cat? wonder if I should have the 02 done first...try the emissions, if it passes great, if not then go w/ the cat replacement...just an idea...any comments from anyone if it's a good idea or a bad one???

Re: 1997 Chevy Lumina Service Engine Soon light

That is if there is a problem to fix. It may have just been a temporary thing. Thats why I said to clear the code and see if it comes back. That way you would know for sure. So far mine has not returned as of about two weeks now. O2 sensors are about $70 plus labor to install, so it would be cheaper to replace. One thing to remember is if you decide to clear the code don't do it right before you have your inspection. They can tell and will fail you for it. A few days prior would be fine.

oh...I see what you are saying. I have all this week and all next until I have to get the emissions done...that might be worth a shot first. Thanks for the info!
