All the stuff we have within the Phx-Metro boarders is 3-5 lanes, so for us it would be awesome. The stuff outside of town is usually 2 lanes though, but I think anything should go on those roads as well, and if people don't like it, then they can walk! We will make our roads so scary to drive on, that only the bravest will venture out onto them, making traffic much more tollerable. The rest of the lamers can use public transportation....ewww.

Re: I learned something today
American drivers are almost the opposite of german drivers. Because driver license is expensive and can be recieved after 18 after completing driving school, people actually appreciate it. In US anyone with half a brain can get it, I've seen people who seriusly cannot drive getting driver licenses.
You never see a driver sipping on that Coke while driving on the autobahn, if one gets a call the driver must safely stop and then take the call. The technology of the road is also a lot better than here, the autobahn is maintained religiusly using the best equipment and technologies. It is also stricktly controlled, sensors find tailgaters and you get a ticket for following too close, no warnings. American autobahn would be a disaster with all the SUVs and shit.

Re: I learned something today
And from what I recall from a program on History, the Autobahn is no longer unlimited with speed, but it has an adjustable speed limit depending on the amount of traffic and traffic flow. Still, the limits are usually higher.

Re: I learned something today
I'm not sure where I read this, but when the USA highways were built, they were built for an average cruising speed of 100 MPH

Re: I learned something today
my car gets its best fuel economy at ~70 mph
A lot of cars CAN'T safely go 100 mph, including a lot of ones owned by people on this site. American highways were not built for 100 mph, there are many turns on old highways that are marked at 45 mph because thats the safe speed for many cars. The speed limit on all of them when they were built was 45 mph. I agree though, people who are going slower need to stay right and it would be safer for everyone.

Re: I learned something today
I mistyped when I said the speed limit at the beginning was 45, I meant 55, but here's a reference saying that they were built for travel at ~70 mph

Re: I learned something today
either way 70mph....i still travel down it at like 80 normally, if heavy traffic then maybe ill be at 70mph...i like the idea of 100+ speed limits tho, there would be a whole lot more accedents up in the mid west since almost erone's car is a winter car, they dont keep all their tire properly influated to the same psi per tire, suspentions are always messed up(in the city) and many people refuse to pay 80 bucks for a wheel alignment to safely drive over 60mph without wobbling in the front tires or any of them. most of the cars up here are old and torn down so it wouldn't be such a great idea...but i could see that happening in the desert, or iowa, indiana(corn field state) and in some parts of texas and california. diddnt there used to be a no speed limit in a 10mile road in texus and some parts of montana?
