Re: Who has racked up the most miles.....??
tune1552, you misunderstand. It was a joke. I have just passed 74 miles NOT 74,000. I've had the car less than a week brand spanking new off the new car dealer lot.

Re: Who has racked up the most miles.....??
my 04 aveo has 67 000km
on it and its making a sound like the timing bearing or teh ohc bearing is on its way out dose taht sound right to you it sounds like a lawn mower when it is cold and it somewhat correctifies its self when it warms up makes me think its a bearing and its coming from the timing housing...and iv had a considerable amount of decreased hp since this noise started if any insite you can either leave it here or email it to me at [email protected] |

Follow the advice of another poster here -- DO NOT exceed 60K miles with this car without replacing the timing belt -- it seems to be a problem area and you could seriously damage the valves/pistons. |

Re: Who has racked up the most miles.....??
Well my '04 aveo just cost me 1600 dollars. The timing belt went and the values bent. Got a value job done and asked my mechanic when the maintenance on the belt was required. The owner's manual says 60,000. My car has 93,000.I did some research and California law requires timing belts to last up to 105,000 miles. It looks like GM went cheap and did not upgrade the belts. My car was checked the last time I bought it in for service and my mechanic said all my belts were fine. I am thinking about filing a class action lawsuit against GM. This could be a huge problem for aveo owners. I commute over 100 miles per day that's the reason for the high mileage.

Seems that issue wasn't corrected for the Aveo -- have heard of many failures already. 60K miles should be seen as the maximum between changes, not a mere suggestion. |

Also the Ecotecs 2.0L 2.2L and 2.4L in the Cobalts and GM’s other American cars don’t use timing belts, they have timing chains.

Re: Who has racked up the most miles.....??
Some of the Mitsubishi engines must have the timing belt replaced or the same disaster can happen busting pistons and bending connecting rods and valve stems. You have to take the radiator and water pump off to get to the timing belt and you best go ahead and replace the water pump while you're at it. It's an eight hour job for a skilled Mitsubishi technician and runs around $800. and has to be done every 60K miles. I was on the verge of buying a Mitsi SUV but when I found it had 80K and the timing belt had not been replaced I backed out of the deal.

I'm not planning on exceeding 50K between replacements since the first one was shot well before that. From Wikipedia: D-TEC D-TEC was an older variant if Family 1 SOHC engine licensed by Daewoo Motors for their range of Opel-derived cars such as Daewoo Espero and Daewoo Nexia. These engines are built exclusively at Bupyeong engine plant. They feature valvetrain driven by toothed belt, in a DOHC configuration for most versions, and aluminum cylinder head.
E-TEC II Updated version of D-TEC. Most models feature Euro III-compliancy, and 1.4 L and 1.6 L DOHC versions employ variable intake geometry.

you should try to find more people who have had similar timing belt related issues and go in on gm. the more people you have the better your chances would be of accomplishing anything. but i do think for the time being everyone should really be cautious with the belts and check 'em periodically. |

Re: Who has racked up the most miles.....??
"mickha2 hi everyone, i have 04 hatch aveo, (yellow
) i have 105K Miles, still running!!" That's nice, but you're living on borrowed time and when the timing belt breaks and bends push rods and valves and busts a piston your smile will quickly turn to a big frown. Notice I didn't say "IF" it will break, . .. I said "WHEN" it breaks and if you don't have it changed you can bet your sweet pippy it WILL break. My neighbors daughter has a KIA and the timing belt wasn't replaced, it broke and total engine disaster and repair would have been so expensive they got a rebuilt engine and put in it. |
