Re: a few more renderings, Mercedes SLK 55 and Ferrari Enzo

Ah, you meant if I traced it. I didn't use an artograph, but I do have an LCD projector that I used. I traced out the overall shape and major elements, then everything else was filled in freehand. The tracing step kinda makes getting the proportions a hell of a lot easier; the point is to get the reflections right, so to make life a bit easier, the line drawing was done via tracing. After reading some of the comments from you guys, it might of been a better idea to use a template on the ellipses, haha.

Re: a few more renderings, Mercedes SLK 55 and Ferrari Enzo

I got no issues with tracing.

it's a viable illustration technique.

the handling of the medium is what sets us apart.

Where's Bonz?

He'll say it again:

If you didn't have good skills, you wouldn't be able to trace well.

I'll normally start with a rough sketch but I'll re-trace it up to 5 times before I get where I want t be before I ink or redraw on the computer.

What kind of paper are you on?

Re: a few more renderings, Mercedes SLK 55 and Ferrari Enzo

tracing is nothing i'm doing, but not everyone can trace and make it look god anyway.

you did, so you got skills.

it's the rendering thats the hardest, the proportions i think almost everyone can learn..

i also think that tracing is a good way to learn to be an awesome artist.

you learn to get all the proportions right..

i use grids, and i think its not so far away from tracing. i use them for customers cars(to make perfect proportions), but when i'm drawing for myself i draw freehand, and guess what? now everything i SO easy to draw, because i learned how to draw everything right using grids.

i'm not a perfect artist and far away from perfect drawings, but if someone wants to lears to draw car lines, tracing or grids are the best way to go..

i think its actually the same thing, the grid just ake a little more time and just a little harder, but you learn a lot from it.

Are there many who uses grids here?

lemorris, do you do everythin freehand or any help of something?

//Emil

sorry for the spelling, it probably sucks, was'nt awake in school. only when there was a nice girl to look at.

Re: a few more renderings, Mercedes SLK 55 and Ferrari Enzo

for me it depends

on the 70 Olds I had the customer bring the car to my job and I took several shots. I built my drawing by combining elements from about 4 of the pictures.

if it's a commision type thing I will work from a photo, if it's for a shirt or toon I almost always freehand (I like the inherent flaws...adds character.)

Re: a few more renderings, Mercedes SLK 55 and Ferrari Enzo

For the big tight car renderings, I usually work big, like on a sheet of 15"x20" cold press illustration board. Marker goes pretty well on it, and the board has a nice tooth that gives the pastel a little something to cling to. To keep everything clean I usually mask off areas with frisket paper.

I totally agree with you guys on the tracing thing. When you want to make a drawing super tight and accurate, it doesn't hurt to trace the overall image. For looser things like sketches then it doesn't really matter if you just freehand - sketches don't have to be really tight or anything. Just curious though, what kind of work do you guys do? (I mean lemorris and zwofurti)

Re: a few more renderings, Mercedes SLK 55 and Ferrari Enzo

That is some more great work!

I know a secret about all renderings.
And lemorris, this info makes your pointed question moot.
If it is photorealistic - it was traced from a photo.
Shhhh - don't tell anybody. It is top secret knowledge protected by the Knights Templar.
If you spread this truth - they will off you.

Check out ARC. This discussion drives the
high brass there nuts. It makes their art worth less.

And if your preacher or mom asked
if you "Freehand"ed it . Tell them "No - I used
Adobe Illustrator Beatch".

dorks

no it doesn't

Just practice. I know the VWs very well so I can build from hand with almost no reference on them.

I know a thousand fine artist who are starving. I eat.

This is dudes thread though.

un-hijack and give him his stuff back.

Woah-ly Hell, I'm an AF fanatic. *Rolls eyes* uh oh.

Anyway, I know, I know the R34 so well I can draw it almost completely from memory. Same with most supercars lol.
