Re: Cheap performance mods?

You're right, my worst experiences with platinum plug fouling were with Ford V8's also....I think they just tend to run too rich and sooty than some others, that's the common pattern with Ford carbs and Early TBI's, to wander to the rich side as they age.

I usually always stick to what the factory uses, I gave up long ago trying to see any tangible improvement from a spark plug change (other than worn out ones).

But if for some reason the OE plugs aren't readily available, I never hesitate to use NGK or Denso in their place. They make a really high quality plug.

I almost tried the Rapidfires in my Impala SS, but decided after replacing the coil, wires, distributor, and timing chain, (what a PITA, good thing it lasts 100,000 miles) that I didn't want to have to go back through it if I didn't like those plugs. I liked how it ran with the OE Delco plats, so I just stayed with what works.

Jeff...Dude, you are a lighthouse in the fog.

I wondered why I just could not get my lincoln to pass emissions, everything is fine, except hydrocarbons. Running too rich, even after a full tune-up.

I didn't know about the aging ford products going to the rich side.

COOL... I'm gonna yank that TBI off and do an overhaul next weekend.

thanks man... (x3)

...err, umm... sorry - didn't mean to hijack...

Re: Cheap performance mods?

Yeah, take the top off so you can see what you are doing, and it all becomes apparent. Just take the lid screws out, loosen the clamp where the duct goes to the lid, and pull the lid out.

Then with the filter out, you can see how the bottom is held in. There might be a nut or bolt in the bottom, I can't remember.

That inlet tube is pretty flexible, you can bend it around a bit to work it loose.

new filter?

ehh what else is there?
I don't really know if a muffler would increase performance without having a new set of headers to go with it. Also, watch out that you don't change the backpressure too much or the engine won't run properly.

Re: Cheap performance mods?

My engine runs better than ever on less than 1 psi of backpressure.. I'm running 2.5 inch pipe front to back, hollowed out converter(resonates good) and a super 40 flowmaster. I'd say i gained around 10 horsepower.

Re: Cheap performance mods?

Backpressure is an old urban myth. It is not true that you need so much bad pressure. It will run just the same. The only difference is it will be louder than shit and then you can hear the way the engine is really running like if it is missing or stumbling.

Re: Cheap performance mods?

Speaking of cheap mods for the 3.1 Lumina... I have a Fox Mustang, and you can adjust the timing, by advancing a few degrees after disconnecting the computer (then reconnect the computer)... also adjust the TPS. Is this possible with the Lumina?
