1990 XJ Laredo 214,000 miles.
It has its share of issues, but when you pay $450.00 for it it is going to. It doesn’t look to have been taken good care of. No major issues, though the heater just quitting was no fun. I am installing a manual 4x4 engagement cable in this weekend.
I find that Jeep’s are like my Harley............always wrenching on something, but thats what makes it fun (some days...lol).
Later.

Re: 160000-too many miles on a cherokee?

I need the size of the spindle nut on a '96 cherokee 2 wheel drive. I assume it is going to be metric. (I need to service the front wheel bearings.) I think its around 1 3/8" or the mm equivalent. Autoparts store says they dont know, and the Haynes manual does not mention size. Thanks

btw, my 96 has the 2.5L (4cyl) 5 speed, with 130,000 miles, its never left me stranded.

No way! Got my '89 with 130000 for 1300, now have 180000, still running pretty good with only minor maintainance.

I dont know what this has to do with the original post but Im always glad to try to help.
I cant help you with the size. You are correct, it is metric (22 mm I think but dont hold me to it). Check your Haynes again. I doubt it gives any info on servicing those hubs. Im not up on the 2WD like I am the 4WD but I think the front hubs are sealed and cant be serviced, just replaced. Thats the way they are on the 4WD XJs. I would assume the 2WDs are the same.

Re: 160000-too many miles on a cherokee?

they can be serviced but its not worth it. but you do still need the spindle nut to come off to get the hubs out. its a 32mm i belive but im not 100% on that.

I have to agree with these fine people. I have two cherokees, a 1990 (195,000) runs like a dream and a 1988 (185,000) runs real good, with only stupid minor stuff. Every one that i know who has a jeep says the same thing i do, they will run until the engine falls out and even then it would roll farther than any other suv!

Re: Re: 160000-too many miles on a cherokee?

I bought a '91 Cherokee Laredo with 168K on it. It's used just when my pimary car is in for service or to tow behind our motorhome. It's now got 178K on it but I have to say it runs like a top. Fixed the oil leaks; prev owner didn't have a cork gasket on the valve cover, and the "O" rings in the oil filter adapter housing were dried up, and gave it a general tune up and replaced belts/hoses and it runs great. Tranny shifts nice, rear is quiet and it gets about 19mpg. Just bought a set of shocks to throw on it to see if it helps the ride.

One thing that has bit me is the same as other Jeeps I've owned - electrical gremlins. Right now, the fuse blows on the circuit that controls the interior lights, power locks and radio memory. Going to bring it into the garage for a new carpet ($134 from JC Whitney) and new headliner next week so I plan to find this short. Since the fues blows immediately, I am assuming that it's a short in the positive side of the circuit.
