Re: Anybody here own a 96 Cobra?
Yea on some Fords they have them and some don't. Hell I had a 97 F150 5speed that didn't have a tach. The point is all 5 and 6 speed Mustangs will have one. There were no girlomatics Cobras so all Cobra gauge pods have a tach.

Re: Anybody here own a 96 Cobra?
in that one picture of the speedo, i REALLY doubt that it's from any mustang, look close and you will notice that it says "Service AWD" (http://www.slickcar.com/bigshot.asp?ProductID=882) on the second picture from the top it shows the real stock cobra gauges wih the speedo reading up to 160 and the tach redlining at 6800-6900 ish but i have herd that the limiter dosen't kick in till 7000 but then i've never ridden in one or driven one so i cant say(http://red98cobra4sale.tripod.com/page_two_pictures.htm)

Re: Anybody here own a 96 Cobra?
It would be nice now wouldn't it. Hell the SVT SportTrac AKA the Adrenalin will have a AWD version of the 03/04 Cobra engine. So who knows what the future will hold. There is a big price difference between the Mustang GT and the way over priced Mustang GT with illusions of grandeur known as the GT500.

Re: Anybody here own a 96 Cobra?
I’m still holding out for a stock IRS unless there is one in the next couple of years I will be jumping ship. I have been looking into a used M3, Z06, or Viper GTS just incase.

Re: Anybody here own a 96 Cobra?
i doubt the awd from the adrenilin will come into the mustang, it would chnage the class of car it is, they would put together a Turbo awd Focus before they made an awd mustang, and as far as plans for IRS not happening in the next few years, since it never made it onto the high dollar GT500 i really doubt that they would put it onto a GT or a car inbetween the 2

Re: Anybody here own a 96 Cobra?
Ford has already said that Lincoln will getting their hands on the D2C platform aka the S197 so there should be an IRS but that will be 09. Then all that would need to be done is for Ford to just scrap the way outdated mod motor for something more efficient. I mean 320hp was they best they could do with a 4.6DOHC without adding a band aid.
The 5.4 is nice and all but its too heavy and really sends the weight balance in to the crapper.

Re: Anybody here own a 96 Cobra?
lol you think the 4.6 is bad, look at the 350 from a Camaro SS the same hp with 1.1L more displacementand now they have 300 hp with less revs and less valvs and a SOHC setup, I think with new heads, cams exhausr bascic tweaking they could have that engine up in the high 300 hp range, and ther reason that the stang stayed with the solid axle was so they could keep the price down, the developmewnt would have just driven the cost up too much, but with how they worked on the solid rear axle it's supposed to work extremely well, and I've herd that a GT500 is more stable and has better handling that the IRS Cobra, but i have yet to see numbers to validate this, so we shall see what somone does an actuall test in it

Re: Anybody here own a 96 Cobra?
320hp out of a 4.6L DOHC is very bad. Maserati is getting 400hp out of a 4.2L DOHC hell even Honda is getting 240hp out of a 2.2L I4. Yes the stock heads, cams, intake, and compression could be greatly improved but even then it is still inefficient. With more displacement, hiflow heads, better cams, higher compression, and the best intake on the market they only got around 425hp and it only costs you $13K and for that price there are better engines out there. I bet you will even be able to pick up a new LS7 from Chevy for less than that.
The solid axle wasn’t used so they could keep the price down. If they wanted to keep the price down they would tell Shelby not to let the door hit him in the ass. His name alone upped the price considerably. SVT even made an announcement this month that the GT500 will now cost $45K. SVT is removing parts and making the car far less than what it was when first seen by the public and upping the price at the same time. There is just something seriously wrong here. Ford and SVT are really starting to piss off many of the Cobra faithful by this to the point many of us are talking about jumping ship and going to GM, DC, or elsewhere. The IRS that was being developed out performed the solid axle they went with. HTT the head of SVT has even been reported as saying just that. Maximum Motorsports has a 05GT at SEMA with a SLA and IRS. MM is well known for their knowledge on how to make a Mustang handle so if they go with an IRS that alone should tell you something. Eventually Ford will have to finish the development of the IRS because like I stated above Lincoln will be getting their hands on the S197 platform in the near future.

and im not sure if they wil have it or not but they are looking to use something like solenoids to control valve timing, lift and duration instead of the cams, thats all i know |

Re: Anybody here own a 96 Cobra?
well you can't compair the 4.6 to a $100K plus car, if we are going to do that why don't we just say look at the ferrari F430 which pumps ou 490 hp from a 4.3, all that takes is lots of very expensive tech which is why the mustang is cheap and the ferrari maserati and the S2k are more expensive here where i live (Canada) a s2k is close to 40-45K and the mustang around 30 ish) and as for the s2k engnie look at the torque curve all the stang car needs is an extra 70 or 80 hp and that would be plenty, the one thing about the 4.6 is it is extremely reliable enging (with the mustang being the most reliable domestic car curently in production) not that the 4.6 is an ideal engine, i'd like to see it with some more tech like varable valve timing an extra 1000 to 1500 revs but it's all going to drive up the cost, and currently for is having touble keeping the mustang on the lot so i doubt anything is going to change anytime soon, but for a few more revs or better breathing Ive gotmy fingers crossed

Well here in Texas where I live you can pick up a new S2k for the same price as a loaded Mustang GT vert. I work just down the road form a dealer and there are always 6-10 new 05s on the lot so they are not having trouble keeping them lots. In 6 years (96-01) Ford was only able to get an extra 15hp and 17tq out of the 4.6DOHC and the new 3V is making near what my Cobra did stock. Yes they have made improvements but they appear to be at their limits. I mean Ford had to resort to a “band-aid” just to get 400hp out of the 03/04s. The GT500 has been reported to be making an estimated 475hp (July 2005 C&D) and it took a 5.4 and blower to do that. DC is getting 425hp out of the SRT-8 and that is without any kind of power band-aid. Ford should have kept the “Hurricane” in development. Now that the Cobra will have a 5.4 and blower there is no place to go without investing in new designs.
