I noticed the trip reading 184 and the odometer reading 1050 - I assume km because the clocks are km - there can't be too many with that few kilometers

Can anybody who speaks German cut through the article and give a synopsis of what went on? I perused through and didn't find any lap times or test data.

wow, im impressed, them germans sure do know their photography, amazing photos! great angles of the car!
also about the verdict... of course they will never admit defeat, german supercar vs british supercar... in a german magazine... hmmmm you know they will be a just little biased toward the porsche... im sure the f1 will get its praise but then theyll throw in their 2 cents about how the carrera gt is better at... whatever it may be... i recently read an article in autocar of the enzo vs. the f1, written by martin brundle, and his verdict was that he'd take the f1 on the road, where it proved far superior, and the enzo at the track, where it faired just a little better than the f1, and my reaction was: 'well, the purpose of the f1 was to be the ultimate road car, not a track car built for the road...' apparently, as we all know, the crown has yet to be passed on... and as so many have said before; the f1 is the best roadcar ever built, and most likely to ever be built

I speak from the collective wisdom of people here rather than from personal experience, but my take on it is that the F1 is indeed a fantastic car and is absolutely legendary in terms of engineering purity. I think in our modern days of corner-cutting, car manufacturer mergers and empires, bottom line margins and vehicle safety/emissions/bureaucracy legislation, building something like the F1 today would be a near-impossibility.

To be quite honest, I would still pick an F1 over a Carrera GT given half the chance, but I would regret the opportunity cost of not having the Porsche. There was a day when I would pick the F1 over anything without a shadow of a doubt, and to a large extent this still applies today, but I would have to step back and think about it.

Cars like the Carrera GT, Enzo and Koenigsegg come far closer to running the F1 gamut than anything else since Murray's creation first rolled off the production line.

The F1 proposition to me is about buying into a legacy of the realisation of a dream by one of the world's greatest car engineers and manufacturers. It's not just about the lap times, top speeds and power outputs (though I understand the F1 is no slouch in any of these departments) - it's about the soul.

If I were after driving dynamics, I would probably drive a few cars (including the F1), before making my mind up. Technology has moved on significantly in the last decade, and key elements of car building which were not practically available during the time the F1 was designed (like advanced carbon braking systems), are fairly standard issue today, even in "baby" supercars like the cheaper Ferraris and Porsches.

Technically and tangibly, there is less of a case for the F1 today than there ever was, and this trend will continue. Cars will get better and faster for cheaper - such is the nature of evolution.

But once the crown has truly been removed from the McLaren mantle, believe me when I say that the car that will win every single one of the million annual "Best Cars Ever Made" competitions will no longer be the Miuras or F40s or SL300s.

And that is, I'd like to think, why we come here.

Tests like the Carrera GT vs the F1 are curiosities at best - I honestly think the practical case for tests of modern cars against the F1 become less and less relevant (notwithstanding the fact that F1s are rare and precious, and these tests generally involve risky driving!).

Hi Joe- Just wondering how sure of this you are? It would be nice to be able to ID the car from the BMW collection as #047 since it seems fairly obvious to most of us that the car in these pictures is that chassis.

I cannot be 100% sure - but I understand that it is. Also - look at the car, the lack of plates (or marks from where the plates would go), the mileage ... it is a museum piece - QED, the BMW Collection.

The car has been in other tests WITH plates
