Re: Did you know that you already beat worse odds than winning the lottery?
speaking of which... i know this couple.. hear me out
one of them is a lesbian, 100%. cool. Her...girlfriend... is a guy, who feels he should be a woman, but loves women and has sex with them, a literal "lesbian trapped in a mans body" sorta thing Now my question is, WTF?!?

wtf man? take a biology class or something. Sperm or any reproductive cell is whats called a Haploid, this means it only has half of your chromosomes in it. You normally have 46 chromosomes (ill talk about abonrmalities later). Now normal cells divide they duplicated the chromosomes, when sex cells devide they seperate the chromosomes. So what once was a 46 is now 23. Each sperm cell has 23 chromosomes. But what is different, is that each sperm cell has a different combination of those chromosomes. So one sperm cell might have the chromosome pattern for blue eyes, blond hair, fair skin. Another sperm cell will have the pattern for red hair, brown eyes, and dark skin. Its all about recessive and dominate genese. If every sperm cell was identical, then every brother would look exactly like his other brother, every sister would look exactly like her other sister. There would be no difference in people who come form the same parents because they would all have the exact same genetic code. Its pretty interesting to actually find out how rare it is that you exist. You were one special sperm out of thousands that made it, any other sperm and you would not be who you are today. You might have different hair, eyes, skin, height, anything. But this thread is all wrong, its not about surviving the odds, either way you were going to be here, but being the way you are, that is a one in a million chance. |

Re: Did you know that you already beat worse odds than winning the lottery?
Actually, it's more like 1 in about 64 trillion that created your own unique genome, and that's not even counting crossing over (recombination) and mutations which essentially make for an infinite number of possible gametes. Every person walking around that you see is really a statistical impossibility, funny how that works.

Re: Did you know that you already beat worse odds than winning the lottery?
I've spent much much time debating, arguing, talking and writing about this subject. The Butterfly Effect can just amazingly blow your mind in such a way that you wouldn't believe. If your great great grandfather's pet dog had barked when he actually didn't, not only could you very well not exist, but possibly none of your family might. And as a result, say the guy that invented plexiglass had in reality, had a conversation with someone that spawned that idea of his, and that person nad spoken with your grandmother and had heard a story from her that he passed on and that was responsible for setting the plexiglass guy on his facade, and that's how we got such an important material, etc. EVERYTHING can be inderectly affected by everything else. Shit, even the first world war (and theoretically the other subsequent wars as well) could have never existed because of a bug, the drop of a pen, a sneeze, or a bird's chirp. Anything.

Re: Did you know that you already beat worse odds than winning the lottery?
^I think that might be reaching just a tiny bit........but i see what you're saying.
But my having just burped while sitting here probably didn't change the course of the future, unless i have some weird airborne disease released through burping that is some kind of unstoppable virus. That seems unlikely. But i guess that's what this entire thread is about, eh? While I'm here, I propose the idea of "The Atomic Bomb Effect." it's kind of like the Butterfly Effect, which says that every tiny little thing can have huge consequences, but it's kind of a reverse view. Every major occurence influences all the minute details that come after it. Think of the nuclear explosions that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki: those two events were an enormous force behing modern politics and even the most bureaucratic mudane happenings in the world. It's not based on any fact, but neither is the Butterfly Effect, so bear with me here. |
