Re: Eighties Contest Entry: Ferrari 308GTB Carma FF

Seriously ambitious project! Best of luck getting it finished on time.
I've added it to the curbside category for now, or are you going to add an engine?

I'm quite sure it will be a curbside, i don't have enough reference material for engine. I think that some engine detail is needed though, because the rear has an opening that clearly shows the engine (see pic).

Funny... I have exactly the same car in 1/24 scale... I must admit that I did not work as much as you do, in fact the italian manufacturer Polistil has made the car in 1/24 scale ! It's a metal diecast model with opening doors.

The model was not perfect, I needed to open front grill, scratch-built the "racing interior ", change seats and that kind of things but the overall shape of the model is almost perfect. I have indeed changed the wheels but the one from the Tamiya Stratos are not exactly good and I took the ones from a lancia Beta Gr5 from Esci (these are the correct shape and size) For the decals, I have taken from spare and for the rest I made drawings on computer and then printed.

Should you require, I can provide quite a lot of doc & pictures on the car, you can also see this tread on another forum or contact me by mail.

Good luck

Thanks for the link Phil, those pictures were great! I'm very interested in any information you can give me about this car.

I have to disagree with you on that Polistil diecast, i have seen pictures of it and i don't like the shape of it. Probably modifications you made to it make it look better, but i'm still going to scratchbuild the whole thing.

Tamiya Lancia wheels don't work, that's not good at all. I compared pictures of original 1:1 cars and they seemed to have similar wheels. I'll have to get that Esci Beta instead.

After receiving that link from Phil it was clear that shape of my fenders was wrong, so i started to carve them to better shape with knife, files and sanding paper. I also had to ad some putty to make them look better. I also took intakes from Tamiya F40 modified them a bit and glued them on top of rear fenders.

I taped modified fenders to the body to get an idea how they look:

Next i will start shaping rear wheelarches and continue rear end modification. I'm still not sure how to do that front end, but i have few ideas. Maybe i can show those to you on next update.

Let me know what you think,

-Niko

Hi, how's the project doing? I have a 43rd scale kit of the '79 car to build as it's a favourite of mine (the '81 car has been ordered for months but nothing yet). The build looks impressive and very tempting... What references are you using?

Rerferences that i've found so far are about 15 pictures found in the internet. Well of course ihave also few articles from magazines and books:
-Rallye Racing 4/1981 (German magazine)
-Ferrari Sportscars and Prototypes, book by Giulio Schmidt

There are also articles on Forza Issue 19 and Prancing Horse issue 81 if i remember correct. So far i have had no luck finding those for reasonable price.

Well, here is a quick update on progress so far:

Rear fenders are starting to get their shape, i widened wheelarches a bit with styrene and some putty:

The body of Marui 308GTB is also cut to its final shape. In this pic you can see everything that will be used from that one:

Front end is also starting to get shape:

And finally a testfit pic with everything done so far:

Wow! Some serious scratchbuilding skills you have! I am loving how well the fenders fit to the body and how clean everything looks. I wish you all the best of luck in finishing this creation.

I just found on ebay the 1/24 scale diecast (for those who don't have the level of Nikko, as I do...) so I have used this base to build the car.

Great job Nikko !

I'm also waiting for the pictures from the Forza issue...
