Go with what the manual says and the 87 octane. But it wouldn't hurt to experiment either. Try the midgrade and see how the driveability is. Run a check of mileage. My son has an '02 Olds Alero GL2 with the regular 3.4L V6. He claims his gas mileage improved with mid-grade and refuses to use regular.
