4 cyl? Kawasaki 1,200cc, nicknamed 'Busa Killer

V6- '87 Buick 231 Turbo
V8- '70-'76 Buick 455 (more Torque, more HP, less Weight, than Chevy engines!)
Little known fact: Buick 455 + Aluminum Heads = 500HP - Less weight than Chevy 350!

V10- Dodge 488c.i. (as used in the Viper and Tomahawk Motorcycle)!

V12- '86-'89 Lamborghini V12
Falconer (Chevy) V12- 1,600HP for only $45,000!

4 cyl.-- Tough call lots of good engines from the world's most popular configuration. However have to pick the Cosworth 2.0 some Swedish tuners get 800 reliable street hp from them.

6 cyl.-- Again lots of great choices from Chevy 4.3 (basically a 350 minus 2 cylinders), the Supra and Skyline in lines sixes, the torque monsters Ford 300 and GM 292, Ford's twin cam XR6 turbo from down under, Ford's 2.8 - 3.0 Cosworth V6s, and Ford's 3.0 Yamaha headed SHO V6 . However I'll go with the Buick 3.8 (later 4.1) turbo V6.

8cyl.-- Lots to choose from but non have made the impact that the Chevy SB has (honorable mention to the Ford flathead though) from it's original 283 form to the modern Z06 and all incarnations in between. Though I have to mention I really love the old Buick fireball straight eight.

Others-- 13B rotary, (don't know much about the 20B), the Ferrari V12, or the boxer style flat 12, The old Lincoln flathead 12 based on Ford's flathead 8 is a good one. The Viper V10, Audi's kick ass in-line 5 from the 80's, how about Suzuki's 3cyl found in the Metro 40+MPG. Hey and let's not forget the Vtwin shovel head Harley. I know it should be under 4cyl but there was the V4 used by Saab in the Sonet (basically half of a 289 Ford V8). Four stroke 1cyl briggs and Straton?

1. 4cyl: SR20DET
2. 6cyl: chevy 4.3 turbo/ buick 3.8 turbo
3. 8cyl: chevy 427 (L71/L72, ZL1, L88)
4. 10cyl: viper 8.0-8.3
5. 12 cyl: i guess the mclaren f1 engine
6. 16cyl: was featured in car craft, i believe, and was in a suburban; 2 corvette C5R blocks bolted together and made between 800 and 900hp. Weighed less then the factory 8.1 V8.

Seen a few hooked up longitudelly to rear wheels in an MG, not bad. Can't get behind it transversely though. Good engine though.

these are not necessarily the best but they deserve an honorable mention because no-one else seems to.

4 cylinder: the 1.5l from the Yaris T-sport
6 cylinder: (inline) TVR speed 6, (V) GTA 3.2, flat (take a wild guess)
8 cylinder: Audi S4 V8

12 cylinder: 1.5l honda V12 but that's a racing engine so not really fair. V12 from the LP400. Ferrari flat 12 also goes here.

other honors go to the new toyota 998cc 3 cylinder and the 190BHP unit from the celica (now seen in the elise.
lol
