Maybe you should try to get DSMlink or a wideband used.

I am going to put in my evo injectors and set the car to -25%. The first step in baseline tuning is setting the injector compensation to stock AFR... it's not risking anything I guess I can trust DSMlink est. AFR within reason. I'll probably shoot for 10.5:1.

everyone that sells used Dsmlink wants almost retail for them. $700 if not more. there is store on ebay that sells the 1g-2g dsmlink for $499 + shipping. I emailed the guys from dsmlink and they conformed they are a ligit distributor. cant beat that price!!!

On teh high airflow maps timing wont get over 10 degrees until 5k rpm, so 7 at 4k sounds bout right. To be sure, check airflow at 4k rpm, convert to grams, and divide by rpm. If its over 2.1 there is no knock there. I just looked it up, at 4k rpm over 2.1 g/rev target timing is exactly 7 degrees
Drive it on.

Edit, here is the info for over 2.1 g/rev for target timing

If you have this much timing there is no knock. Also keep in mind though that intake temps over 84 degrees or below 34 degrees will cost you one degree of timing. Coolant temps over 206 cost you one degree, and over 224 degrees will cost you 2 degrees. So subtract the timing lost to each of these situations as they apply. For example, over 2.1 g/rev at 6k rpm with intake temps over 84 degrees and coolant temps at 210 degrees, you would expect to have 13 degrees of total advance. As you get below 2.1 g/rev you have to guess at what target timing is. It will go up as airflow goes down though, so if there is no knock the numbers will be higher. If the numbers are lower than these high load target values at lower airflow numbers, there is some knock going on.

DSMlink comes with a "2G tuning guide" that has the chart for timing at 3 load points. They call it high medium and low, but the only one that has actual numbers is the high (2.1 g/rev). I actually have the 3d timing maps for hte 2g now... Hmm. There are 15 different load levels, but they don't have airflow/rev values. I wonder if I can get that info from tom...

Are you 100% possitive max timing target is 17 and not 16?

I see 17 in the DSMlink tuning guide, and 16 in the spreedsheet Tom sent me. I know I have seen 17 degrees at 2.1 g/rev. At any rate, its only one degree, I say its close enoguh either way. Most people will not hit that max number anyway, since most DSMs run hotter than 206 and intake temps are always over 84 degrees this time of year unless you run a MAFt. One degree of knock retard would not even be worth mentioning, there is typically some knock "noise" on every pull.
