Good info though, thanks, make me wanna 240! QUESTION: why do so many 240 owners feel the need to swap to an SR20 then? Those got to be one of the most overpriced swaps out now...especially in the Bay Area.

Re: New track time for the 240...
because its JDM.
and anything JDM is therefore cool. because all of the drift s13's in japan had them.

Re: New track time for the 240...
^Exactly.
The KA pistons IMO are near as strong as the SRs, but the high CR is what makes them peak out lower. I would put money on them holding just as much as a set of SR pistons if they ran exactly the same CR(including head chamber size). Both engine's bottom ends are strong as shit. But I would def like to have an SR. It came turboed from the factory so timing and fuel maps are already set up for boost. And also the cooling configuration is much better. The KA has coolant lines running through the intake manifold.

i forgot who said it on the 240sxforums, but the quote is this
" every othe company swaps in a bigger displacement engine for more performance, american guys swap in bigger v8's, honda guys swap in bigger engines. then why do nissan guys swap in smaller engines to increase performance ?

I don't think there is anything wrong with swapping in an sr. If both get the job done it's fine. Each engine just has its own flavor. Unless you swap in an rb then either of the other two flavors suck
. Oh yeah, and btw great times sepcially with the open dif.

Pfft....
Whoever has the know-who and ambition wins. The engine doesn't matter here.

Re: New track time for the 240...
Ok another question: What is the difference between the KA24E and the KA24 DE? Is one SOHC while the other is DOHC? I always heard the KA24E was a dog of a motor...

Re: New track time for the 240...
seriously, the real reason (which is what the original swappers tbelived as well before this jdm craze) is that its easier to start with a factory turbo engine like the sr20 than it is to turbocharge an engine which was designed to be n/a. back in the day (lol) it was probably cheaper to get a swapped sr20 than a turbo ka. i remember when i was looking into getting a s13 the price for a sr20 was about 1200 for a complete redtop engine, which was WAY worth it. but its just dumb now how expensive theyve become.

Re: New track time for the 240...
^Exactly. The KA requires more than swap and go for 250whp. Simply put, the KA requires higher level mods earlier in your quest for power. The SR, you can make 250whp right off the bat. At that power level on the KA, you should really be running an ECU tune and at least 550cc injectors. But on the KA, you get that stuff out of the way early and select a decent turbo to start with and you are good to 350whp. If you do an engine tune, injectors are the only thing stopping you.
And I remember reading about SR swaps back in the day running like $1000-$1200 for an engine set. Shit I'd do it if it costed that much....lol

Re: New track time for the 240...
Well I got my swap because I really liked the idea of a low mileage high performance motor. All things considered I think I made off pretty well with a very clean chassis, the swap and a few bolt-ons for $7500. I went this route because after my 3kgt threw a rod I began to fear teh high mileage.
Someday, if the sr fails me I will invest in a ka-t with a rebuilt block. I don't remember who posted the video of a bunch of ka-t's tearing ass almost everywhere (think it was tat?) but the video was amazing and made me almost choose the KA-t route.
