Maybe your spark is weak, and non-combusted fuel is going into your exhaust sys.

Re: 1993 2.3 power loss
I think I have the same problem as you with the 2.3. I drive on the interstate everyday and it does not have ANY power. I am getting only 18-19 mpg, and I always have to downshift to 4th going up hill. I think it is because the 5th gear is actually an overdrive (maybe not in your case), which isnt really used for acceleration. If your truck is strong through 3rd gear (mine seems to be), maybe its just the way the 2.3 runs.
Just an idea....good luck. |

Re: 1993 2.3 power loss
i am having the same problems with my 93 2.3 mustang ran a scan on it today and came up with theses codes . koeo test: 118,172,327,328,&334. koer: 213&411. does anyone know what the trouble codes are and what they mean. my car started having problems around 140,000 miles. i know the last 2 aer for the egr system so i am going to checkt the egr system and see if it's clogged or if i need a new sensor or valve.

Re: 1993 2.3 power loss
ok i found some info on my trouble codes. 111 system checks ok, 118 ect sensor is/was high or open., 172 ho2 sensor not switching- system is or was lean- single, right or rear ho2 sensor., 213 ignition spout or saw circuit open or shorted., 327 egr signal is/was low, 328 egr valve position was/is low., 334 evp sensor is/was high. now would any one know if these codes would be casuing the problems we are having? i know if i put the pedal to the metal it down shifts into passing gear and runs upt to 4500-5000 rpm then just acts like it hits a brick wall. the rpms drop all the way down to 2000 and if i put it first and run it up to thta point and stop the car it dies and won't start for a few minuets. i'm not sure if it is getting too much fuel at that point or just what is causing the problem. i replaced the timing belt, and the ignition coil packs. luckly i work for a parts store so i can get my parts cheap. when i can afford them anyway.

Re: 1993 2.3 power loss
I agree with psychopete you should check the timing belt to see if it skipped. all you have to do is put #1 at tdc and pull the little rubber inspection plug on the timing cover to see if the arrows are lined up. Don't worry about engine damage, if the belt were to break these are non-interference engines, I've had 2 belts snap on my 94 with no damage. My second thought is have you checked/cleaned the mass air flow sensor?
