Dont know, has something to do with your computer or how your car takes it but look at like this.

When you drive and you slowly step up on the gas your car will go faster but not as fast as if you just step on it. (i.e. out of no where from no gas to full throttle)

Now when your car is about to shift, just by looking at the revs (and remembering the speed or whatever you do) you let off the gas quickly and then step on it again making it close up and WOT. I'll tell you what happens, instead of just going faster slowly into second like it usually does it jerks just like a manual does and thus goes quicker.

Just try to re read and try it on an auto if you can.

Re: Topout or Govener

i hate that govenor crap... i truly despise it!
i know my engine will pull atleast till 150-160mph.
There's gotta be an easy way around it. It might take a while, but I will figure this out.

Re: Topout or Govener

you need a reburned chip, but um, youve got a carbed setup, are you still using the computer to control everything???? just run 12v to your fuel pump bypassing the computer, the factory rev limiter is a fuel shutoff (which is good to know if your planning on running nitrous, nitrous plus spark, minus fuel = big bang.) so by pass the fuel shutoff by hardwiring the fuel pump and you dont have to worry about it.

Re: Topout or Govener

third gens are not computer limited, it's a physical limitation in the tranny. according to TCI the electronically controlled 4l60e is also limited by the tranny throttle vavle. I'm pretty sure it's not fuel cut-off... that sounds completely different than the trans kicking back down into third gear. fuel cut-off sounds like your car is dying out. I don't drive a 4th gen, but from what they descrbe, it sounds like the tranny and not the computer.
I just found this....

Re: Topout or Govener

No, in the 4th gens it is DEFINATELY controlled by the computer. I know this because your standard tuning/reprograming removes it... and also that i've hit it and it cuts fuel

Re: Topout or Govener

okay... iwasn't sure about 4th gens, but I know 3rd gens are not limited by the comp. that makes sense since the tranny is computer controlled also. after you removed it how fast can you go? does it still kickdown into 3rd?

Re: Topout or Govener

you cant "remove" it per say, but you can set it to 250, 300, 1000 mph... something you knwo you wont be hitting lol. I don't know abotu top speed, 3.8 speedometers only go up to 125, all i know is top speed is def. higher than that.

Re: Topout or Govener

speedometers dont mean jack crap. thats one of my pet peeves.(i know you didnt say that it means anything you actually said it dosnt mean anything so im not directing thos towards anyone). but yeah i hate it when people are like my cars faster look my speedometer goes higher then yours!! thats how my x girlfriend was. shes like my cars faster then yours look it goes to 125 or whatever it went to and i think mine only goes to 110 or something.and at car shows people always look at the speedometer and go dang that car can go 220 or something stupid like that. and again no one said this 97camarors just made me think of it when he said 3.8 speedometers are lower then top speed.

They are WRONG. I have been burning 3rd gen chips long enough to know that the ECM does limit the speed. There were NO 3rd gens made with the 4L60E transmissions.

Re: Topout or Govener

Almost everybody I know thinks of top speed by the speedometer, not by power and what your car is actually like. Just like some of the current low power 4 cylinder cars, with speeds that go to like 150, but if you look at an old musclecar like an SS that goes to 120, they think their 4 cylinder is godly. That really kills me.

I agree, Xbox, is because they get narrowminded and think that how good your car is because of your speedometer, What they dont look at is that in those days the 4 speed was the 6 speed of today.
