You don't have to have full out sex to get an STD. Simply messing around or kissing someone can give you a case.

Its a sort of a burden lifted when the doc tells you (not that I was expecting anything but always better to play it safe).

And they don't necessarily protect from STD's. They can "help" assist, but they're far from what i would say a safe bet.
